How To Lay Peel And Stick Vinyl Tile Flooring

I’m a big fan of easy DIY projects that don’t require a demo or a lot of dust. And this is one of them!

Painting my kitchen cabinets is about as intense as any DIY project I want to do in my house. 😂 Hats off to all the DIYers who remove cabinets, replace paneling and tear up floors. But I need a professional to handle these jobs in my home. 😜

Ever since we moved into our house with its beige floors, beige walls, and beige cabinets, I’ve been on a mission to change things up! We have the exact same beige tile in both bathrooms, the laundry room, and it’s even the tile on our fireplace. Nobody got creative when building this house, that’s for sure!

So even though I’ve wanted to change them for a long time, fear has held me back. I did not want:

I love the look of Moroccan floor tiles that you see everywhere today. And I was planning on making them a template until I discovered the peel and stick tile option.

But the stick on the labels sounded much simpler. Read on to see if I’ll be using them on my tiles. 😉

I decided to use them in my girls bathroom first to get my feet wet. It’s a small space and it’s for our guests too, so I wanted to do something fun in there for everyone to see and enjoy.

It took me a while to decide on the style I wanted because there are so many great options. I’ve outlined my favorites in this post with 25 options for different styles of peel and stick vinyl flooring. And finally I scaled it down to a Naples tile sticker (click here).

Steps for applying bark and vinyl tile floor stickers 1. Paint the grout lines with floor paint or grout paint.

I painted my grout lines exactly as they were, but as you’ll read below, I had to order smaller tiles. So I would need to paint further on top of the tiles. Don’t make my same mistake!

First I clean all the floors, then I vacuum each tile with my stick vacuum and wipe down each tile in front of me with my mop. Allow the cleaner to dry before applying the stickers.

Peel And Stick Tile: A Foolproof Guide To Doing It Yourself

I found that if you mess up, you can quickly remove it and reapply. After the strip is stuck, remove the remaining backing and clean it. Work out any bubbles that may be stuck in the bottom.

Sometimes I used my hand or the side of a paper cutter to move the tiles. They stuck pretty well.

5. Mark out unusual angles or corners or around tiling parts used on the back of the tile sticker.

I would use an old sticker paper backing and mark where I needed to cut. And then just a decal cut with my scissors. If the trim didn’t touch the floor, I left 1/8 of an inch inside the cut line so that the sticker would fit under the trim piece.

Does Peel And Stick Tile Really Work?

The tiles on the left were cut smaller than the tiles on the right, so you can see how they overlap on the right.

My advice would be to order slightly smaller tile stickers if your tiles are slanted, and overdraw the grout lines.

And frankly, that might not even be a problem. I haven’t had them at all, but I’m afraid someone or something might catch a corner of the tile and it will just fall off.

Only time will tell – and I’ll be doing a follow up in maybe a year to see how they hold up.

How To Update Tile Without Removing It {peel And Stick Floor Tiles}

But in the meantime, I’m just waiting for one of my kids to come and yell that they took one of the tiles out. Maybe I’m just paranoid? Lets see. Like I said, so far so good.

Update: I ended up removing the bathroom floor tile stickers when the toilet overflowed before we put the house on the market in 2019. It’s been a year and a half since I put them on. So for the price, I was happy. How much use we got them!

You want to wait 24 hours after laying the vinyl tile before using it and 72 hours before wetting it. So there is some curing time for the adhesive. Hopefully this will stay. #fingerscrossed

I think peel and stick vinyl tiles are fabulous! I would 100% use them again in my home. But I think they are best suited for covering a flat surface, either linoleum, flat tiles, wood or a floor that is leveled. Or you can use them in a vertical space that doesn’t deal with traffic!

I hope this helps you in your decision to peel and stick vinyl tiles. I kept telling myself that if it didn’t work, then it was a small price to pay to try something new! It wasn’t going to break me unless they came out. 😊

Frequently Asked Questions About Vinyl Tile Stickers 1. How do vinyl floor tile stickers hold up over time?

I think they can last for years in a low traffic area of your home. I wouldn’t use them on an entryway or laundry room floor that gets a lot of traffic! With excessive traffic, you’ll find that the corners are cut out. I would use a stencil instead!

You and not! If you pour water on top of the tiles, they are very waterproof. But water can get under the edges if the floor is wet. And depending on what type of water gets on them will determine whether you want to leave them in place.

So, when the toilet in the girl’s bathroom is overflowing. I also knew that we would be putting it on the market soon, so I removed all the vinyl sheets.

It’s always hard to decide for someone else and someone else’s budget. But overall I think they’re a fun, inexpensive way to update a small space. If it’s a room that doesn’t get a lot of traffic and isn’t prone to standing on the floor, I’d do it again in a heartbeat!

Last week I shared our budget bathroom makeover reveal and today I’m writing my review of the inexpensive peel and stick floor tile I used for the makeover. Vinyl stick tiles make the biggest impact in this small room and I still can’t believe I paid less than $100 for 5 boxes. I mean, buy jackets and shoes that cost more than that.

At first I wanted to rip everything out and make room for my dream shower, but like many of you, this crazy year isn’t really the year to tackle such a project. I also know that doing this remodel as cheaply as possible would help others more than an extensive and expensive replacement.

When I bought the cheap peel and stick tiles I read all the reviews I could find to see what others were saying and if I could confirm some of the pros and cons.

Before I start the review and installation, I wanted to show you how bad the tile looked in our bathroom. The gravel was chipping, even the paint where I was trying to restore the gravel was chipping. Some of the ceramic tile was damaged and generally bad looking, even though I still love the 20 year old tile I originally chose.
