“[The network said] we have to find someone to challenge her and she’s a woman as much as a man,” Richardson recalled of male character Tim “The Toolman” Taylor.
He recalled that, days before the film began showing, he was under contract with Disney for another project that didn’t work out. Now, Home Improvement is about to start and they need a female character.
“They called me and said, ‘There’s this guy, he’s independent, he’s won an award, he has a special on Showtime,'” he explained. “I’ve never heard of it, I’ve never heard of that show and I’ve already seen a show that didn’t fall … that was done with a stand and a family and everything.”
Richardson admitted that he was hesitant to join the sitcom, but he and the producers believed that his chemistry with Allen was so good that he could not leave the part.

After the show aired, it took off and Richardson said he realized how his themes resonated with American viewers.
“The main thing I saw in the email was, ‘Are you looking out our windows? The people you’re fighting with Tim are like our family,'” Richardson recalled. . “Or, ‘I got it, I have three sons,’ or, ‘It’s really hard, because it’s like our family!'”
However, after eight seasons, Richardson is ready to leave the show. He said he and Allen argued about negotiating for him to come on for another season, but he declined.
She said Allen refused to do a show without her and turned down a pitch to continue Home Improvement with Jill’s character being killed off. As a result, the series ended in 1999.

And in 2011, he found a home on TV again with the premiere of Last Man Standing. The comedian and actor will get the ninth season he’s always wanted in 2021 when the series airs its final batch of episodes before ending for good. . During its eight-year run, “Home Improvement” became a staple of the American television landscape, scoring Golden Globe and Emmy nominations and topping the Nielsen ratings (via UPI) . Allen’s sitcom stars Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor, a former Binford Tools salesman and host of a show-within-a-show called “Tool Time.” Richard Karn plays Al Borland, Tim’s down-to-earth host and frequent prankster of Tim’s jokes. “Home Improvement” also explores the dynamics of the Taylor family, including Tim’s late wife Jill (Patricia Richardson) and their three children, Brad (Zachery Ty Bryan), Randy (Jonathan Taylor Thomas), and Mark (Taran Noah Smith) .
“Home Improvement” served as an advertisement for Allen’s business. The comedian recently got his start on stand-up and began writing his first script on the show. He did his comedic parts as Tim Taylor, whose winning combination of cocksure ambition and failure to follow comedy gold tips. Tim proves to be a handyman, but his know-it-all approach leads to waste and accidents. One area where Tim really showed skill, however, was working on cars, related to the memento that Allen took from the set of “Home Improvement.”
An avid car collector, Tim Allen has the famous 1933 Ford Roadster from “Home Improvement” as part of his extensive collection (on Motorious). The Roadster was built on the set of the sitcom, making it an important – and functional – memento for the actor. In fact, Tim’s beloved hot rod is featured prominently throughout the series, gracing episodes such as Season 2, Episode 24’s “Birth of a Hot Rod” and Season 4 Episode 11’s “Some Like It Hot Rod,” (via IMDb) where Jill never leaves the car outside in a snow storm. The Roadster takes center stage at the end of Season 3, when Tim and his nemesis Bob Vila face off in a car race.
Motoring enthusiasts may approve of some of the modifications that have been made to accommodate the set car, such as – gasp! — a Chevy engine. But for “Home Improvement” die-hards, the Roadster isn’t an image for fat monkeys; a relic of TV history. With Allen pulling in about $1.25 million per “Home Improvement” episode by the end of the show’s run, it may not be the most valuable car in his collection. However, that’s all that appears in “Tool Time.” almost every episode (on Closer Weekly). His wife, Jill Taylor, played by Patricia Richardson is enjoying her time on the show. “Tim and I are always laughing at each other,” he told the press. “We came up with a lot of things that you see on set every day.” After a decade on the air,
