Mine: Stylish home behind a white picket fence A growing family suddenly found their dream home in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
Contributor I am an interiors and lifestyle photographer based in Frankston South, just outside of Melbourne on the stunning Mornington Peninsula. I’ve been photographing professionally for over 20 years, and prior to my life behind the lens, I worked in interior design, with an Associate Diploma in Interior Decoration and Design from RMIT, so combining my two passions is the world’s best. Have you ever heard the saying, ‘There is a cup for every saucer’? Well, that was certainly the case for Chrissy Brown and her husband Pete Whitehead when they bought their home in the Melbourne suburb of Glen Iris. To their surprise, they were the only bidders at the auction for the house, which they planned to renovate and flip. But 12 years later, they’re still loving their family home in the suburbs.

Who lives here: Former interior designer, now owner of online retailer White & Co., Chrissy Brown, with her husband Pete Whitehead and their children Will, age 10, and Zoe, age 8.
Whitehead originally found the Glen Iris home listed on the Internet in 2004. With a growing family, the couple wanted to upsize from their small inner-city home in Richmond, and so began looking a little further afield. Brown’s “yuck!” Despite his initial resistance, Whitehead decided to go on a mid-week inspection of the property on his way to a meeting.
He immediately saw the potential the house presented, and drew Brown to the next open house. She immediately got excited. After pooling their savings and bidding at a very quiet auction, the house was theirs.
The beautiful street frontage was very appealing to the couple, and despite the ugly 80’s interior, the bones of the house were in great shape. Since no major structural changes were required, the renovation would be purely a matter of replacing the old with the new. The couple had already bought and sold three houses before buying this one, so the original intention was to renovate and flip this one as well, but once they settled in, the house overwhelmed them. had taken

Brown says every room needed work when they moved in. “I was three months pregnant at the time,” she says, “plus I already had a 14-month-old son, so in my mind, six months to complete the renovation! She shudders at the memory. .
“We had renovated a few houses before, so the harsh reality of renovation costs was something we were used to. We’ve learned from previous renovations that you get what you pay for in terms of trade-offs and finishes. Having said that, there’s certainly merit in getting two to three quotes,” Brown adds, but it’s worth paying a little extra for a good reputation and craftsmanship.”
Off the main hallway at the front of the house are the children’s rooms, followed by a bathroom, office and master bedroom, with walk-through robe and ensuite. Next in line is a chill-out lounge area before coming into the open plan kitchen, dining and living area.
The original decor was 80s style – apricot carpet, pink walls, and green trims. “We repainted the walls inside and out, re-carpeted the bedrooms, dug up and relaid all new wood floors and redecorated,” says Brown. “It was epic, and we lived through the whole renovation with me being pregnant, and having an active baby. I don’t think a day goes by when there isn’t a businessman in the house.”

Brown purchased the beautiful bentwood dining chairs as a gift for herself, after successfully closing her interior design business to focus on her new retail endeavors. “I had admired them for so long, but I didn’t buy them when the kids were little because they would ruin them,” she says. “They have made a huge difference.”
Brown’s design aesthetic is simple, clean and light. A crisp palette of white and wood tones, along with natural textures, gives the home a calm, open and relaxed feel.
Sliding glass doors spanning the entire length of one wall were added to the rear of the house, creating more indoor-outdoor living in the warmer months. With a large picture window in the dining area, natural light is maximized year-round.
“Luckily Pete shares the same style as me, so decorating was never an issue or a clash of ideas,” Brown explains of his love of clean, open spaces. Meizai’s Camarich sofas, seen here, were a splurge to fit their large new living space.

“We had a small budget for the work we did, so I contracted all the work myself and the project managed the demolition, design and installation of two bathrooms and the kitchen,” says Brown.
The kitchen was a mess before the couple moved in. Brown remembers opening a closet and holding the door in his hand. “Even the dishwasher made a noise like a backfiring car,” she says.
Now it’s a contemporary space suited to a busy young family, with modern appliances and a breakfast bar for quick morning meals.
A separate chill-out room, designed with children in mind, has an old but comfortable sofa, a TV and an Xbox to keep Will and Zoe entertained. Brown had a large Pony Rider flag framed by local framer Forman Picture Framing. It fits in with the rest of the decor as well as adding a touch of fun.

The informal lounge also doub
les as a music room, with the kids practicing their guitar here without disturbing the rest of the household.
Towards the front of the house behind the hall, the master bedroom is a very bright and zen-like space, with beautiful natural linen bedding and a simple color palette.
“Everyone thought I was crazy for putting permanent bedside lights,” says Brown of the glass and wood lamp from French company Un Esprit En Plus. “But these are very beautiful and unobtrusive, and will never date.”
Similar to the kitchen, the bathrooms were simple and fitted out on a fairly small budget. “As we didn’t initially intend to stay in the house long, it was more about making a clean aesthetic change,” says Brown. “But they are practical, and with a little style, still look beautiful.”

Zoe’s room is light and bright, with little feminine touches like bird artwork and musky pink bedlinen from Country Road Home. The room was also lit with fairy lights, offering a nice dim glow at night.
Like all sports-mad 10-year-old boys, Will’s room pays homage to his love of cricket, basketball, and especially football, with touches of the family’s favorite team, the Kangaroos.
