Whenever I mention vinyl to my clients, they often think of that awful linoleum that was installed in their parents’ or grandparents’ homes. Since then, vinyl has come a long way with improvements in quality, durability and style.

Luxury vinyl has been around since the 1970s, but it’s only really become popular in the last 20 years. Luxury vinyl still contains the same PVC vinyl, but is made of 6-8 layers of material, including a clear top layer for shine, a clear layer for wear protection, a design layer, a cushioning foam layer for a comfortable walk on it , and two backing layers for durability and strength.

When it comes to hardwood flooring, the main thing you need to decide is whether it is hardwood or hardwood.

Hardwood is just that…solid wood through and through. It is typically 3/4 inch thick. Hardwoods can be sanded and finished at least once, but often two and sometimes three times depending on the thickness.

Constructive hardwood is produced in layers. The top layer is a hardwood veneer, with layers of laminated wood underneath. These lower layers may or may not be of the same type of wood as the upper layer. The main difference between the two is a solid piece of wood vs. laminated wood.

The main advantage of hardwood flooring is that it can be sanded and varnished. Engineered hardwood cannot. Solid hardwood is usually easier to repair if you’ve scratched, dented, or water damaged it.

When you compare the cost of each, quality really matters. You can find cheap hardwood, but if you’re looking for good enough quality, solid wood flooring will sometimes be cheaper.

With so many options available (there are literally thousands of designs and styles), you’ll have no problem finding something you like. Tiles are often chosen for flooring in high-traffic or moisture-prone areas.

Both porcelain stoneware and ceramic tile are clay-based and fired in a kiln, but technically porcelain is a specialized type of ceramic. The more refined clays used to make porcelain have a higher density and take longer to fire at a higher temperature than ceramics. Porcelain is generally stronger and harder than ceramic, but usually not more expensive.

We always recommend our customers to purchase porcelain stoneware whenever possible. To determine whether a tile is porcelain or ceramic, feel it. If the coating is smooth, it is porcelain. If it is uneven or rough, it is ceramic. If the top of the tile is already glazed, this test will not apply. Turn the tile over and feel the reverse side.

Carpet continues to be a favorite among homeowners. You can’t beat the feeling of a plush, luxurious rug on your bare feet! While most people stay away from carpets these days, they still have a place in some areas of your home.

When planning a renovation, consider what new flooring options you have. We’ve had customers who wanted to keep their existing floors and almost always regretted the decision afterward. So, before you start renovating your floor, we’ll outline 10 eco-friendly flooring options to consider instead of traditional flooring.

Green or eco-friendly flooring is much more than just flooring made from natural, recycled or renewable materials. It also takes into account the long-term impact of the flooring material on the environment as a whole. Some factors that help determine if a floor covering is sustainable include:

Green Source Solutions provides information on green flooring, commenting, “The residential flooring industry makes many claims about greenness and sustainability. If you’re serious about purchasing eco-friendly or eco-friendly flooring, you should look for products that have replaceable raw materials (less than 10 years old): bamboo, cork or wool carpets, or “upcycled” like recycled rubber flooring. These are truly sustainable floors. Make sure the natural products are NAUF (no added urea formaldehyde), as it is a carcinogen. Some Big Box stores have been known to carry UF products because they are cheaper to manufacture.”

One of the most famous options for ecological floor coverings is bamboo parquet. Bamboo comes from bamboo, a grass that grows back every three to five years. This harvest cycle is much faster than the tree’s harvest cycle, which is over 20 years. Bamboo parquet has many similarities with wooden parquet and is easy to install and maintain. It should be noted that most bamboo is produced in the Pacific Ocean, which means that it can create more pollution the further it is transported.

Customizing A House To Make It Your Home

Hallmark Floors and Teragren Inc. say more about the benefits of choosing bamboo flooring, stating, “Teragren Bamboo by Hallmark brings beautiful floors and countertops into your home while reducing your reliance on the world’s dwindling resources. Their exclusive Moso 5.5 is sustainably sourced, promotes green building, is LEED (MR Credit 6 rapidly renewable materials) compliant and is renowned for its durability and active carbon sequestration. Generations of builders around the world have used bamboo in construction, decoration and furniture. Teragren Bamboo is the perfect, fashionable and sustainable alternative.”

Cork is often associated with wine bottles or perhaps as a wall decoration, but it is also a great sustainable flooring option. The cork floor is made from the bark of the cork oak. Usually such trees are cut down, and after three years they grow again. Cork floors are a fairly long-lasting option, as they can last anywhere from 10 to 30 years. They also have some antimicrobial properties, can act as insect and tick repellants, provide insulation, are flame retardant and easy to maintain.

Jelinek Cork Group expands on the benefits of cork flooring, saying, “Choosing an eco-friendly floor doesn’t mean sacrificing design or functional aesthetics. For example, cork flooring not only contributes to the climate, but is also the foundation of mid-century modern homes. Plus, it can help limit sound transmission and keep your feet warm in the winter.”

Linoleum is another natural flooring option to consi
der. A linoleum floor is created by combining linseed oil, wood flour, cork dust and other natural materials. Linseed oil is obtained from flax plants, a renewable and widely available material. Linoleum is very durable and can last for about 20 years. Like cork, it is also fire resistant.

Knowing Your Home: Flooring Options

Traditional carpet is not a sustainable flooring option for several reasons. It is often made from petroleum, which is a non-renewable resource. In addition, carpet often contains toxins and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). According to NYC Health, “VOCs are chemicals commonly found in carpets, rug cushions,” and “these chemicals easily evaporate into the air and can degrade indoor air quality.” However, if you have your heart set on a rug, sustainable rug options are worth considering.

When choosing eco-friendly carpets, Carpet & Flooring Online suggests, “Choose carpets made from a natural material, rather than synthetic carpets (such as polypropylene), which are more harmful to the environment. 100% wool rugs will last for decades and have natural dirt-repellent properties. Sisal, jute and sea grass are also popular natural rug materials that add texture and rustic appeal to your home.”

Wool: A wool rug is made from natural resources, spun into threads, and woven into a rug. Many wool rugs can last for hundreds of years, making them very durable.

Jute: The vegetable version of wool is jute. It can be woven into a thread and woven with a resistant one
