Where Was Home Improvement Set – Patricia Richardson has opened up about her time on the hit sitcom Home Improvement and revealed why the show ended.

Richardson and Allen starred in the massively successful sitcom from 1991 to 1999 as married couple Tim and Jill Taylor.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight , Richardson explained that she didn’t actually audition for the role of Jill, but stumbled upon it when the producers were desperate.

“[The network said] we’ve got to have someone who goes against her and who’s as much a feminist as a man,” Richardson recalled of the openly male Tim “Islander” Taylor character.

He recalled that a few days before the show began filming, he had signed a deal with Disney for another project. Meanwhile, Home Improvement was about to start and they still needed a female character.

“They called me and said, ‘There’s this guy, he’s a stand-up, he’s won an award, he’s got a special on Showtime,'” he explained. “I’d never heard of him, I’d never heard of that show, and I was like, I’ve never seen a show like that before … it’s made with a stand and a family.”

Richardson admitted that she was initially hesitant to join the sitcom, but both she and the producers had such good chemistry with Allen that she couldn’t pass up the part.

After the show aired, it became a hit, and Richardson said she found that its themes really resonated with American audiences.

“The first thing I saw in the mail was, ‘Are you looking out our window?’ The things you and Tim fight about are like our family,” Richardson recalled. “Or, “I see, I have three other sons,” or, “That’s amazing because it’s like our family!”

However, after eight seasons, Richardson was ready to leave the show. He said he and Allen negotiated to have him come back for another season, but he ultimately backed out.

She said Allen refused to do the show without her and refused to continue improving the house where Jill’s character was killed. As a result, the series ended in 1999.

And in 2011, it once again found a home on television with the premiere of The Last Man Standing. The gunslinger himself returns to the mayhem with longtime friend ‘Al’, actor Richard Karn. The two are producing a new competition show for the History Channel called Assembly Required. According to UPI.com:

Allen announced the show on Twitter in August of this year. “I’ve always admired people who fix things instead of replacing them,” he says. “So I put together a competition show with HISTORY [channel] and my old friend [Richard Karn] and invited people who like to get things done!”

Today, Allen shared the very first photo from the set of the new show, and it looks amazing. Full of retro, masculine and home improvement callbacks – the stage seems set for some really fun times.

Unfortunately, we still don’t know much about the show beyond what Allen has shared. However, we do know that Assembly Required will be released next year on the History Channel in 2021. There’s “BMF,” a Starz drama based on the true lives of brothers from southwest Detroit who become titans of the illegal drug trade. And “The Mayor of Kingstown,” a Paramount+ series about how prisons fuel the economy and shady dealings of a fictional Michigan town. And HBO Max’s adaptation of the novel, Station Eleven, is a post-apocalyptic reimagining of a Shakespearean troupe traveling through Michigan 20 years after the world’s population was hit by the flu.

Not counting the NBC comedy, American Auto, a comedy that chronicles the financial turnaround of Payne Motors. Or “Bargain Block,” an HGTV reality show remodeling effort that turned Detroit homes into affordable design showcases. Or “The Big Leap,” the Fox drama about a second chance through a ballet audition.

Television shows tied to the Detroit area and other pockets of the Great Lakes State are in the midst of a renaissance (or at least a very good karma). Let’s hit pause and explore the history of 45 important Michigan TV shows — but only occasionally.

It’s a list filled with mistakes from a season that won’t ring any bells, and a few familiar names shot in Hollywood studios and often relied on t-shirts — Go Blue! Go Party! Go Lions! — creating a sense of place.
