Home Depot Garden Center Application – Home Depot is selling plants that are officially listed as invasive species in many states across the United States.
According to US law (Executive Order 13112), “invasive species” are non-native species “whose introduction may or may cause economic or ecological harm or harm to human health.”

Although these plants look innocent in their small pots in the center of the garden, they spread quickly when wind, stormwater and animals carry their seeds far. They invade our farms, forests and parklands and there are no insects or animals that feed on them to keep them in check.
Johnson’s Garden Centers
Invasive plants uproot and displace our native plants and rob our wildlife of the food they need to eat. They suffocate our native plants and worsen the climate crisis. They damage farm equipment and livestock and make our food more expensive.
According to the National Park Service, invasive plants now cover 1.4 million acres of land and water in our national parks and threaten the integrity of these areas’ ecosystems.
Efforts to remove invasive plants are costing taxpayers billions of dollars. Biologists studying invasive species across the United States estimate that they cause $120 billion in economic damage annually. A NASA report puts the economic cost of invasive species in the United States at between $100 billion and $200 billion. In the state of Virginia alone, crop damage, poisoned livestock, damaged timberlands, diseased plants and expensive management costs can total $1 billion annually.
Not only that, but countless gallons of toxic herbicides are sprayed each year to control the spread.
The Home Depot Garden Project
But wait—it gets worse: The federal government estimates that about 25% of North America’s plant species are at risk of extinction, and the US Forest Service and National Wildlife Federation estimate that 42% of endangered and threatened species are at risk from invasive species.
This is just a sample. Other officially listed invasive plants sold at Home Depot include liriope, Chinese clematis, Japanese pachysandra, European blackberry, Italian arum, and more.
Gardeners and homeowners trust Home Depot to sell trees that benefit our homes, neighborhoods and the environment – not trees that are destructive to our economy, health and parklands.
Our biggest problem is uneducated common people. But Home Depot is the worst place to unknowingly buy invasive plants. I shouldn’t question whether the tree I’m buying will harm the planet by destroying our ecosystem or threaten my children’s future.
Things Home Depot Employees Won’t Tell You
Invasive species are so out of control that many people feel completely helpless. But we have to start somewhere, and Home Depot can start today. Stop selling invasive plants. It’s only going to get worse until we do one now.
Start a petition of your own This petition starter stands up and takes action. Will you do the same? Start a petition I don’t buy a lot of plants at big-box garden centers, although sometimes they are surprisingly good. More often than not, though, their selection is less than exciting, and sometimes their plants aren’t exactly healthy (see this recent post).
Last weekend I discovered that it doesn’t have to be that way. For years I’ve been hearing rumors that Home Depot in San Rafael has a great nursery. What’s more, some Bay Area gardeners speak of it in almost reverential terms In an old post from 2010, landscape designer Michelle Darvis quipped:
I thank my lucky stars every time I shop at my local San Rafael Marin County CA Home Depot nursery. The nursery is on par with some of the best nurseries in the United States. The man who runs it, Charlie Rossi, is a seasoned horticultural veteran of the nursery industry. If you visit ‘his nursery’ your eyes will be blown out of their sockets. Naturally beautiful. More appreciation can be found in the comments of this blog post on Garden Rant.
Home Depot Garden Center Reviews In Misc
Why is this Home Depot garden center so good when so many others suck? Simple: It has a dedicated nursery manager who prides himself on sourcing the best plants.
Last weekend I finally had the opportunity (or, rather, created the opportunity) to visit this fabulous place. Does it live up to the hype?
The first thing I noticed was the amount of space devoted to plants. In the photo above, you can see how many plants are outside the store—more than most Home Depots have inside their garden centers!
The succulent selection was pretty decent. Nothing too exotic but not surprising considering the big growers in Southern California don’t specialize in most plant rarities. However, all the plants I saw were happy, healthy and better maintained than usual.
Home Depot Expects Growth To Slow Down
Agave attenuata ‘Ray of Light’ is not a plant you want to see at Home Depot
In addition, the plants were arranged with much more care and attention to look good. I expect to see this at a full-service nursery, not at Home Depot.
It was great to see this cornucopia of plants in the middle of winter (I know, it’s hard to call it winter when the temperature is in the 70s):
Despite the sheer number of plants for sale some empty tables were left. I will go back when they are in stock.

I didn’t take many pictures inside the “real” garden center because it mostly looks like Home Depot. In essence, then, the San Rafael Home Depot has the same kind of garden center as any Home Depot garden center PLUSplants attached to the actual storefront PLUSa large outdoor area.
For years I’ve been looking for a reasonably priced Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Bantelle’s Sensation’. Here were half a dozen of them! (I didn’t buy one because I already got one at Putt’s Cactus Nursery last year.)
If I hadn’t bought so many plants on a recent shopping spree I would have loaded up. Instead I limited myself to two plants: a small Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Moonshine’ (the grey-green plant in the middle of the photo above), and a showy Grevillea ‘Bonnie Prince Charlie’ (a hybrid between Grevillea rosmarinifolia and Grevillea alpina):
One look at the flowers was all it took to know what I had in store for this grevillea. It is already planted in the front yard. I don’t waste time these days because I hate hand-watering plants in nursery pots.

The nursery was busy on a Saturday morning when I was there. From what I’ve seen it seems to be very popular with landscapers. I saw two men carrying four 15-gallon barrels in a flat-bed cart. Heck, I’ve never seen a 15-gallon bucket at Home Depot before!
I don’t know if Charlie Rossi is still the nursery manager. If he doesn’t, he leaves a legacy that continues — and is clearly successful. It doesn’t take a finance degree to understand that beautiful plants and a large selection translate into more business. So why don’t more Home Depot stores (or Lowe’s, Orchard Supply, etc.) invest in their nurseries? Loves planters and plants and most garden products. Visit there again and again and find great products and outdoor decoration products. Plants are of very good quality
Over the years I have gone from store to store looking for plant quality, health and price and have found that unless the season is over and the price is not reduced, the best place is Home Depot!! My advice is to go early in the season for the best selection
As a long-term customer, I left the majority disappointed after a period of poor experience
