Vacuum Cleaner For Vinyl Plank Flooring

Vacuum-mop combos, wet-dry vacuums—whatever you call them, we’ve found in our tests that these machines can wash the dirtiest bare floors much faster than any other cleaning tools. It’s possible you might be better off with a different type of product. But if you think the speed of a vac-mop combo is your best bet, consider the attachment version of the Bissell CrossWave first.

Diy Pros: Luxury Vinyl Plank Over Existing Floors

The classic CrossWave gets floors nearly spotless faster than any other floor care tool. It sucks up solid debris, sprays spills and wipes away stains, all at the same time. This CrossWave is a plug-in model, so it’s stronger and should last longer than the myriad of cordless vac-mop combos out there. Fair warning: Regular maintenance is essential.

The Pet Pro is essentially the same machine as the standard CrossWave. But this model has pet-centric brushes and detergent, plus a strainer (which makes getting rid of the inevitable bits of wet hair in the dirty water tank a little less messy).

Bissell’s standard, green CrossWave and purple CrossWave Pet Pro (they’re very similar) both leave bare floors looking tidier and shinier than some other vacuum-mop combos we’ve tried. Pours, solids, screeds—the CrossWave will easily and safely soak into the vast majority of wood, stone, ceramic, vinyl, laminate, and linoleum floors. We expect the CrossWave plug-in to be more durable than its competitors, which are mostly wireless, battery-powered models — technology that tends to stop working after a few years. Bissell also has a solid track record of making its branded detergents and basic spare parts widely available for years, even in some brick-and-mortar stores. While the CrossWave isn’t a substitute for a real carpet cleaner, it can suck up fresh spills from carpets before they become stains (something not all vacuum mop models can do well). It can also function as a decent regular dry vacuum (which some other vac-mop combos, including our other pick, the Tineco iFloor3, can’t). The only major downside to the CrossWave—besides the pseudo-charge of being plugged into an electrical outlet, and assuming a vac-mop model makes practical and financial sense for your home—is that it’s pretty nasty to empty and wash after a cleaning session. . But that goes for all vac-mop combinations.

The Tineco iFloor3 has no cord, so mopping and vacuuming floors is even easier than with the classic Bissell CrossWave. But it’s not as strong at cleaning and probably isn’t as durable. And the iFloor3 lacks a bit of versatility—it can’t dry-vacuum, nor can it really vacuum up wet messes from carpets.

Ultimate Guide To Vinyl Plank Flooring

If you’re willing to pay extra for the convenience of a cordless vacuum mop model—even one that doesn’t quite clean and likely won’t last nearly as long as the CrossWave plug-in—we’d recommend the Tineco iFloor3. It will still handle almost any stain or solid or spill, but we found that it leaves a little more residue than the super absorbent CrossWave, so your floors won’t look as polished. It’s also not really suitable for soaking up spills from carpets. One unique feature is that it works more or less automatically: You turn it on, it starts moving and vacuuming right away, and you don’t need to remember to press any buttons or fiddle with any settings. As for the availability of detergent, brushes and filters, we don’t know what to expect. They’re easy to find now, but Tineco hasn’t done a great job of keeping spare parts available for their popular cordless stick vacuums.

For this guide, I tested six upright vacuum combos (or wet-dry vacuums, or CrossWave knockoffs—they go by many names that no one still agrees on). Most of the testing took place between late spring and early fall 2021.

Wirecutter also recently analyzed approximately 6,000 Amazon user reviews of eight popular mops (including a traditional mop and some flat sprayers), with the help of an artificial intelligence-driven tool called FindOurView. It gave us a lot of detail about the features that owners value most, and it helped us understand what real owners think about the relative strengths and weaknesses of each type of tool. (Especially for vacuum-mop combos, the most beloved quality is that they get floors nearly spotless so quickly and easily, and that helped us frame our thinking.)

Personally, I’ve also written or edited Wirecutter guides to a host of other floor care products, including traditional vacuums of all kinds, carpet cleaners, and robotic mops (which I tested at the same time as these upright vac-mop models. ).

A vacuum cleaner can wet and dehumidify your bare floors at the same time. It’s probably the fastest, most convenient tool for thoroughly cleaning your dirtiest floors—usually kitchens and mudrooms, but really anywhere.

But we don’t think most (or many) people actually need a vacuum-mop combo. There are many other tools that work just as well, and most of them cost a lot less, even if they take a little longer to get the job done.

In the right homes, however, vacuum-mop combinations can make your floor care routine much easier. And the best models are quality devices that do the job they say they will. A vac-mop combo can be especially valuable in households where messy floors just seem to come out of nowhere. They are also great for soaking up spills, especially if there are solid pieces mixed with liquid (certain models can even do this on carpets). Personally, I got a visceral thrill from seeing the dirty water tanks on the best vacuum mop models fill up with murky, swampy water, knowing that the dirt is no longer on my floor.

The downside, vac-mop combos are much more expensive than almost any other type of mop, and they don’t clean edges or spray lines very well. Only certain vacuum-mop combinations can operate in dry, vacuum-only mode. And even those that can are worse at digging dust and hair out of carpets than most stand-alone vacuums. It can also be a pain to empty the waste water tank of a vac-mop combo, especially if the machine has sucked up a bunch of food and pet hair, mixed in with all the murky fluids.

How To Make Vinyl Plank Floors Shine? All In One Solution

Vacuum-mop combinations have suction, like a regular vacuum. But they also drip out some cleaning liquid and automatically scrub the floors with a spinning brush, kind of like an electric mop-cleaning thing. And they can safely suck up and store solids and liquids alike.

Some models, including the Bissell CrossWave (our top pick), can optionally operate as dry vacuums and won’t dispense liquid until you push a button. Others, like the Tineco iFloor3 (another model we recommend), will automatically wet wash when the power is turned on—there’s no vacuum-only mode. Both styles have merits, which we cover in our selections sections below.

Many people (and even brands) call this type of product a “wet-dry vacuum.” But that’s also a common term for workplace vacuums that can safely suck up solids and liquids but won’t wet wash your floors (no cleaning solution, no brush). So we’ve decided (somewhat awkwardly) to call products like the Bissell CrossWave “vacuum-mop combos,” to avoid confusion with other types of floor-care products.

In some homes, certain vacuuming combos might be the primary floor care product (replacing a separate vacuum and mop). The more bare floor you have and the more often you’d like to move it, the stronger the case for vac-mop superiority. This doesn’t seem to be a common use for these cleaners, and most bare floors don’t need to be wet-mopped anyway. But it’s an option, and it can
make the price of a vac-mop combo seem less daunting. If you think you want to go this route, be sure to choose a model that can only operate in dry vacuum mode, such as the Bissell CrossWave.

Best Vacuum For Vinyl Plank Floors 2023

Effectively, the vacuum suction of a vac mop tends to be on par with that of a cheap stick vacuum—perfectly good for getting almost any type of debris off bare floors, but mostly ineffective on carpets, especially carpets with long, dense fibers. .

The mopping performance of most vac-mop combos is strong enough to wipe away any stubborn stains and a lot of built-in dirt, leaving floors looking pretty polished. Like all wet-mop tools that use water or a mild detergent, vacuum-mop combinations are safe to use on any sealed bare floors, including most wood and stone tiles, and all ceramic tile, laminate, vinyl and linoleum surfaces. In relative terms, vac-mop combos work much better than a wet Swiffer or robotic mop (or other pad-style cleaner). But they are not as effective or versatile as a traditional wet mop (if used correctly); for example, combs don’t clean grout lines the same way traditional mops do.

Some vac-mop combinations claim to work on carpets as a way to “refresh” their appearance (we saw this claim in an ad for the Bissell CrossWave Max). That is a meaningless term, and we would argue that it is
