I Jumped On The Viral Home Depot Trend To Find A Man
Spring is almost here, and that means Home Depot is currently hiring thousands of store associates across the country.
A Home Depot spokesperson told Business Insider that the company is on track to hire 80,000 associates “during our busiest sales season.”
The company is looking to fill both permanent and temporary part-time positions. A spokeswoman said Home Depot seasonal locations “are available to support the expected spring sales growth in front end, lots and gardens.”

Spring is the holiday rush for the home improvement business for most other retailers, so Home Depot’s big hiring season isn’t surprising. However, some retailers’ methods refer to the recruiting environment.
Reuters reported in 2018 that the company plans to bring in 1,000 technology professionals. Eric Schelling, executive director of talent acquisition at Home Depot, has previously talked about the importance of attracting tech candidates by offering them projects to work on. In this current campaign, it looks like one such in-house project is being used to strengthen the company’s hiring experience.
A Home Depot spokesperson told Business Insider that the company’s hiring teams use a “tracking tool that shows where applicants are in the hiring process.”

“The aim of this tool and candidate self-service, which we launched last year, is to speed up the recruitment process and put candidates in control of their recruitment journey,” the spokesperson said.
A new Home Depot employee described the hiring process to Business Insider as “incredibly easy” and flexible. The employee said that shortly after applying, they received an email listing several time slots for an interview. After the employee applied for a part-time position, they submitted a cheek drug test and Home Depot initiated a background check.
“Here’s where it’s amazing from my point of view: I’ve updated every step of the way,” said the employee. Two days after the interview, I received a phone call from the store’s HR staff to set up a first date and time to fill out the tax forms. I was even paid to complete paperwork. As a technical person, I remain blown away. Process at Home Depot.
This streamlined process could be an asset as Home Depot struggles with a tight labor market. Retailers like Target and Costco have boosted starting wages, while McDonald’s is offering more educational benefits to its employees than ever before.

But Home Depot — and other companies pursuing similar technologies — can set themselves up for success by offering candidates a pain-free, easy-to-navigate hiring and onboarding process. Employees at Home Depot in Philadelphia voted overwhelmingly not to become the first store. In the chain to represent the association.
The National Labor Relations Board, which oversees union elections, reported that only 51 workers voted to join Home Depot Workers United, while 165 voted against.
The group’s lead organizer, Vincent Quill, told CNN that the union’s filing for the election was inspired by the union’s successful representation vote at an Amazon distribution center in Staten Island, New York, the first union in online retail. Huge, and over 200 successful pitches at various Starbucks locations nationwide.
But union organizing campaigns are tough. After winning the vote on the Staten Island facility, the Amazon alliance lost votes on two other distribution centers, one in Staten Island and one near Albany, New York, and dropped a petition to vote in the California location.
