Luxury Vinyl Plank Over Tile – The vanilla kitchen has a new pair. I (well, a friend) installed wood-look vinyl tile stickers right over the 1980’s beige ceramic floors and umm. WOOOOO!!! I can’t wait until the end to show you the pictures. You just have to see to believe what a difference CA-RAY-ZEE has made in updating this little abode of mine.
The floor was the last vestige of vanilla milkshake left to banish. And boy, wood tones bring harmony to every living space. The added heat makes me want to lie down and start making wooden angels on the floor.

Now vinyl isn’t what it used to be. This item has a beautiful design, great texture and won’t shrink in the least. Don’t think linoleum is outdated.
We installed laminate flooring throughout the rest of the house except for the kitchen and bathrooms. However, laminate is not recommended for wet areas. The transition from carpet to laminate is horrible. We changed everything from beige carpet to gray washed laminate in one day.
The installer quoted us $900 to do the kitchen in a similar wood vinyl, which included removing the tile (although he mentioned he could put the LVT right over the tile). We weren’t ready financially after we did the rest of the house, so we waited.
When I started slooowwwwly remodeling the kitchen and revisited the idea of vinyl, I thought, ‘man if I don’t have to put up the tile, I can definitely do this myself.’

Everyone is selling LVT. Not everyone sells the gray tone and wood design that I want at the right price point. Finally, I found something that matches the rest of our laminate flooring at Floor and Décor called Duralux. The planks are 6 inches by 36 inches and 5 mm deep. They are two inches shorter in width than the existing floor, but not noticeable. They turned out really beautifully.
What I love about Duralux flooring is that you can use it right out of the box. No acclimation is needed, no underlayment, not even a moisture barrier. And the money was phenomenal. I paid $318 for the whole kitchen. Do you remember the above text? FAITH is expensive. You save a lot of money when you learn to do it yourself.
I debated removing the tile for a while and finally decided to keep it in place. There is a small rise (perhaps 2mm) from the dining room to the kitchen, but it would have been way in the opposite direction if we removed the tile as the laminate is 8mm thick.
Painting the cabinets is a temporary fix. We will need to invest in real cabinets soon, but I can’t live with that floor much longer. This ‘floating floor’ clicks and locks in place. This means you can take the whole thing seriously if you want. So when we install new cabinets, we can use the same floors. I bought an extra box of flooring to cover any case.
What To Use For Filler Before Laying Vinyl Flooring
In a square room. But there were SO.MANY.ANGLES! It’s not hard, just a little tedious because of the shape of my room. Totally possible, but it took longer than I expected. To cut the boards you just score the front with a utility knife and clip. For small pieces, we take it in and use pliers to separate the small pieces. A puzzle is really handy too, but it’s not entirely important.
I started the work and then I called a friend who had experience when I was sick and couldn’t finish the night before my son’s birthday party. Sure, it would take me about 2 hours. Well, let’s just say we went over two hours because of all those little bitty dry cuts.
When I say I am head over heels in love with this floor I mean IN LOVE. It really feels amazing underfoot (not cold at all) and there is zero hollow sound due to the foam backing instead of the usual cork backing of another luxury vinyl plank. I really wish we could have done the rest of the house using this floor because it is more realistic. The texture is more true-to-wood than our laminate AND I don’t find this flooring as easy. We tried to be gentle when putting the ingredients back in, but the fridge inevitably drew a little and never came out.
At this point (only three weeks in) I have zero cons. Well, one: just don’t put them in soon.

I can honestly tell you that these luxury vinyl panels from Lowes have been the best flooring solution we have made to date.
Don’t get me wrong, I love our Lumber Liquidators Antique Strand Bamboo Wood Flooring and porcelain tile in our master bath, but I’ve been happily surprised for the past 3 years (see, it took me so long to get this post) with how well that is held up.
These luxury vinyl planks look like real tile and are very easy to keep looking like new. The acrylic grout is a dream come true – no sealer required! It also has excellent color consistency, does not need to be sealed, resists mold and mildew, and is non-toxic.
Also, the tiles are not as hard underfoot as ceramic tile and are not as sensitive as cold in winter.
What Type Of Flooring Can You Install Over Ceramic Tile?
Another selling point is the ease and simplicity of installing this tile on your subfloor. Not to mention, the small amount of tools you will need. I can almost guarantee that you probably have most of them in your toolbox by now.
We did two bedrooms in our new home with luxury vinyl plank flooring. The first is our kids/guest bathroom and the second is our laundry/mud room.
Materials needed: Stainmaster Casa Italia Luxury Vinyl Tile or LVT planks of choice Saddle Gray Vinyl Tile Grout from Lowes or grout color of choice Tile spacers (we use 1/8″) Level(s): Two Levels – 4′ will work and squares, used to produce straight lines, a laser level will probably work even better. Find the center line of the room to give a straight line to start. For this room it is the center of the door.

After you have drawn all the lines, start laying the tiles by removing the paper and placing them on the floor. Do not forget the spacers if you are grouting!
More than likely you will have to fill in the end or each line with a cut piece. This particular brand of flooring is very user friendly and sticks to the sub-floor well.
Measure the tile and then mark it with a knife. Apply gentle pressure to break the tile where the score line is.
This is where scrap wood comes into play. Be careful to cut the lvt on the scrap wood block so as not to cut into your new floor. I don’t want to walk in and out for all the cut stuff so I cut my lvt in the bathroom. This is a great time saver!

It’s always handy to have a set of knee pads when you’re on the ground! I chose a towel.
Here we have two buckets of water, mixed grout, a large sponge, and floor grout float (soft trowel), and some old rags and towels. I’ll be honest, Sam took the point on this part of the job. It’s great at the end of the job!
This is the lvt floor used in the laundry/mud room. Lowes unfortunately no longer carries this flooring. However, I’m sure you can find a similar color and size.
Here you can see the same tools lying around as with the bathroom. I also started this floor as well as the bathroom with a straight line drawn down the middle of the door.
