Home Kitchen Meaning – This is my favorite design space because it sets the tone for all other spaces. It is the center of the house and where we all spend the most time together. There are several sponsors who have made this possible! Collaborated with Kohler for plumbing throughout the house. We used their sister company, Kallista, in our kitchen!

I had an idea for a kitchen inspired by the UK but with modern features. When designing a kitchen, I think it’s really important to list your top priorities and then work from there. For me, using an unlacquered brass faucet was a non-negotiable.

Winning Kitchen Color Schemes For A Look You’ll Love Forever

We worked with Kohler for all plumbing throughout the house, and in fact worked with Kohler’s sister brand Kallista on this faucet to get the perfect unlacquered brass finish. I like that it will patina over time and how it connects with our interior door hardware.

I love that the shape has this leg detail, but it has this square arch here that still gives it a modern feel.

I chose Kohler’s White Haven because I wanted a large farmhouse sink for my kitchen. I love the drip edge detail. This is what we often do in the wood under the farmhouse sink. It catches any spills and protects your cabinets when washing dishes. I wanted to do this differently so I actually made a marble drip edge on the floor and I love the result.

We did a tuned pot filler here that has never been done in the kitchen before. I really like it. Great for filling pots for cooking as well as filling vases for flowers. This is on top of my other dream list entry, the Lacanche range.

Creating A Unique Kitchen Design

The Lacanche Range is a beautiful work of art and a show off, but for me it was the focal point of the kitchen. Coming from France, it took about 6 months to get here and it was worth the wait. We took the double oven and there is a griddle where Syd makes chocolate chip pancakes for the kids every morning. We chose the color Chantilly, which is a soft white. There are silvers and brasses in these colors, which ties in with the many metals we use throughout our home.

When designing a kitchen, we usually start with the range and hood as a center wall and build from there. Tyler from Killowen Construction was great and drew the entire extent wall to scale so I could look at and make changes before things got too bad.

I knew I wanted a plaster hood with a delicate bevel and a really nice texture. Then, since there are no walls on either side, I wanted to frame the edges to create a balance symmetry. We ended up building a very tall cabinet with latches on either side.

As for the cabinet design, I wanted a shaker detail and added this little cove bead along with the cabinet profile. We worked with Killowen on building the house and they also did the cabinetry, so they helped bring the custom details to life.

Kitchen Cabinet Design Ideas 2022

From the start, I always wanted putty-colored cabinets meant to be a creamy off-white to the surrounds. But we have this 13-foot island and it felt like if we painted everything the same color it would flatten it out a bit.

My original plan was to go for a light wood to match our floors, but when we got into the space and they put in an island, I knew in my gut that wasn’t the right thing. We needed something that felt different and was a bit more saturated. After going back and forth, I found the perfect dark brown, rich tone stain that was neither too warm nor too black.

I wanted to add some symmetry. I felt I had to add something to break all this symmetry a little bit around the focal point. Things that are too perfect feel a bit boring. So we made this piece at the end of the island to feel like furniture. I wanted very delicate legs, not chunky ones, and one that could hold plates and plates and bowls and all that good stuff. I love that openness breaks all closed cabinets.

Next on my list were marble countertops. There was little to dissuade me from this. Syd could have tried to say “we need something more sturdier” and I would not have listened because I love the look of real marble. We got these Calcutta Ora slabs from the Bedrosians and they have this beautiful gray and gold grain throughout.

Kitchen Utensils And Uses For Home And Business

We’ve used it all over the island, on the backsplash, and even on the floating ledge here. Yes it has some minor etchings and scratches, but I don’t care. It has been in Italy for thousands of years and is worth every little hassle.

I worked with Armac Martin because I needed a variety of hardware throughout my kitchen. They are a British company and have beautiful brass handles that are not lacquered. It’s really solid and I like it. So we made the handle, the cup holder, the latch and pull the integrated fridge this long.

At the back of our island, we have incorporated all the functional elements needed for a functioning kitchen. So the bins are hidden behind what look like two drawers, and the ultimate luxury of this kitchen is that we installed two dishwashers, one on either side of the sink. They are also incorporated into cabinets.

Adding character and ingredients with history was an important part of designing a new kitchen that still referenced the past. A few years ago, I was on eBay at 1am looking for pocket doors because how cool would these symmetrical pocket doors be on either side of the range?

The Mcgee Home Kitchen Tour

We actually made a kitchen frame to fit this century-old beauty. We left them there and put them in. So when they get really messy we can stash the pantry and mudroom. Or, like most days, you can open the door to get in and out.

I actually used two backsplash materials in my kitchen, so I made a slab for the range wall, but I did this beautiful clay tile for the fridge wall. I like the texture and movement.

It also connects with the backsplash we did in the pantry, tying the two spaces together. We will be sharing more of our pantry here soon!

To round out this space, I set my heart on this beautiful green leather and gold pendant. I love the angular shape and scale, and I feel like a little touch of green goes a long way. We also made some great stools by McGee & Co., we wanted to give them a little industrial feel, we liked that they had swivel and so did the kids.

To round out the styling, I finally ended up using a lot of vintages I’ve collected over the years. Some of my favorites are a white vintage vase I’ve had for years, a dough bowl, and this little painting on an easel. I think those little details bring the kitchen to life.
