Home Kitchen Hood Cleaning – To clean the inside of your hood, use a damp (not wet) cloth to remove oil and dirt. If the inside of your hood is very dirty, spray a cloth with multi-purpose cleaner or other cleaning solution before cleaning the inside.
Most of us think of cleaning the outside of our appliances that provide kitchen ventilation, but the outside of your range hood isn’t the only part that needs cleaning. To maximize the life and efficiency of the hood, the inside must also be clean. Any excessive grease build-up will not allow your kitchen air to fully escape from your home. The strategy below also works well for a sticky range box.

Note: When cleaning the inside of the hood, do not spray or rub any cleaning solution directly on the stainless steel, as the inside of the hood contains a circuit board and exposed wiring. Instead, spray or rub your solution onto a towel and then pat dry.
What To Do If You Don’t Have A Range Hood Or Vent
Since the inside of the hood isn’t visible to your guests or you (unless you remove the filters), it’s easy to forget. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t clean it. Cleaning the inside of your hood will help keep your home free of pollutants and smoke.
After you remove your hood filters, you will see the inside of your hood. It includes one or two blowers, depending on your model, and you’ll also see some cables.
Winds can also limit your ability to clean the inside of your hood. You should be able to move around the blower or blowers to clear most of the inside of your hood.
But if you want, you can disassemble and clean the blowers. We have a video on how to store your box blower to help you through the process; see below.

You don’t want to get any water inside the hood unit, so be careful when cleaning your hood. Do not put too much water on the towel.
If your cover needs more than just a quick clean, you have several options for tough stains. Glass cleaner will clean your lid of mild grime buildup, acetone will be more effective at removing tougher grease, and a gentle scrub will attack the toughest stains.
Soft Scrub is a last resort and we only recommend it if you have used your hood frequently in an outdoor BBQ environment and the oil is extremely hard.
If you decide to use a soft scrub, make sure it is free of dirt. This will help preserve the stainless steel coating on your hood. Apply a gentle scrub to a gentle white British scrub that will clean stainless steel smoothly.
Do Recirculating Range Hoods Actually Work
If you use a cleaning solution, first wipe the cover with a towel containing the solution and then wipe it with another dry towel.
Every stainless steel has grain; depending on the way it is prepared, the grain runs horizontally or vertically. For smooth cleaning, always dry with the grain.
If you do not know the direction of the stainless steel grain, try to clean the device horizontally and vertically with a dry cloth. You should encounter some resistance when drying the grain.
Now that you’re done cleaning, put your filters back on your hood and slide the back end first. Make sure everything inside the unit is dry before inserting the filters.

When was the last time you looked under the hood of your microwave and checked the exhaust fan filters? If it’s been a while or you’ve never done it, let me warn you: it won’t be pretty. The purpose of a range hood filter is to collect grease, so if it’s doing its job properly, it will look and feel, well, greasy.
Over time, the filter can become so clogged with grease and grime that it loses its effectiveness, so it’s important to clean these filters regularly.
This guide shows how to clean the filter in your sink with boiling water, baking soda, and a good amount of dish soap. (I prefer the morning.) Some hood filters can actually be washed in the dishwasher, but depending on how often you’ve cleaned your filters, I don’t recommend cleaning them without at least cleaning them this way. (You don’t want too much grease in your dishwasher!)
Remove the filters from the hood: Most filters should easily slide out of the bottom of the hood. Mine had a metal ring that I could grab to push the filter up and let it out. (Image credit: Cat Meschia) A: Range hoods are designed to capture grease, smoke, and other airborne contaminants created by cooking, but they can’t eliminate grease. In some cases, the oil (and the spills that refuse to be removed) must be removed.

Cleaning the hood itself is a challenge. Unlike filters, which can be cleaned or replaced, the housing must be cleaned in place. If you want to do the worst part first, start by tackling the surface directly above the range. This area is more difficult to clean because it is awkward to reach, but a step stool can help.
Pull the filter or filters out, which may involve pushing t
hem out so you can bend them enough to slide them off the edge where they sit. When removing the filters, look at the space where the fan is running. Although there are videos on YouTube showing how to cut them to clean them (after the unit is disassembled), the cleaning instructions that come with the hoods do not recommend doing so.
Dorian Olsen, who runs the Viking Range Corporation’s technical service line, said you should clean up any oil you see. “If the filters are cleaned regularly, there shouldn’t be much,” he said. If you see a lot of grease build up, call a professional duct cleaning service or an appliance service company and have someone inspect the fan casing and ductwork to the outside.
Generally, the insides of the fan don’t need attention and you can start cleaning the hood and the cover, starting from the areas around the filters. Dip a cloth or sponge in warm water mixed with a little dishwashing liquid. Squeeze a cloth or sponge so it doesn’t drip. Dry the area, cover it again or rotate it
