Floating floor is really not a type of flooring, but a method of installation. With this process, the planks are pieced together like a puzzle using a locking mechanism or edge glue process that does not fix the flooring to the subfloor. When combined with gravity and friction, this assembly makes the floor stable, but able to expand and contract—especially when placed in the substrate properly. .

The relative ease of installation makes flooring a popular choice. You’ll find it across many categories, especially hardwood, laminate, and luxury vinyl plank flooring.

A big pro for the floating floor is its DIY-friendliness. With this method, you can lay your flooring without nails and glue. This makes it as easy to remove as it is to install. So if you need to fix a few plans, you can use the easy-to-follow method of click-together on the surface or on the edges of your floor (a always check your product settings guide for the correct procedure). Or you decide that you want to change your flooring completely, it is very easy to store and remove the planks. Although the floors are easy to install, it is important to prepare your subfloor so that it is clean, flat, and dry. We also recommend adding underlayment to help your floor look good, and boost its sound insulation, thermal energy, and comfort underneath. This step will help make sure that your floor is free of sound or areas of sponginess.
Planning: The most important part of installing a floating floor is planning for your job. You want your place to look good, so it’s worth taking the time to properly prepare it. Really think about your new flooring and how it will work with your room – think about your focal points and how your flooring will run through different rooms. You may want to plan new furniture, or take pictures of your existing one to help you recreate it once the installation is complete. Measure everything carefully so it’s not too thin or not cut, and use our checklist to make sure you have everything you need before you start working. For large projects, we recommend that your products be delivered. This can save you from making multiple trips (and will save you a lot of carrying!). Why not check out the delivery service that LL Flooring has to offer? Measurement: When measuring how much floor you need, remember to add 5% deduction, and add 5% if you will install on the diagonal. This percentage may be higher for smaller projects or larger files. Make sure you allow for enough underlayment. Measure for the new foundation and other areas that need to be cut-if two or more floors are at different heights, you need to install the transition. You may need to install T-moldings on doors or openings depending on the type, length, and width of your flooring. Tools: Having the right tools ready will make the job easier: A cutter can save you time and reduce maintenance, but make sure the cutters are recommended for your choice in floor. Tape measure pencil / marking line 6′ level Framing square / metal straight edge Screed Utility knife (blade) Miter saw Table saw 60 tooth carbide tip saw blade Jamb saw Drill bit Light hammer flat pry bar Broom Eye ear protection Niosh Dust gloves Hygrometer or moisture meter Color paint Touchup markers Quick square Vacuum Grinder Tapping block Safety First, protect yourself—always wear gloves, eye protection, face mask, and if necessary, ear protection throughout the removal and preparation process. You may also want to lay down sheets to protect your home from dust. Remove Your Old Flooring: You must remove your existing flooring, unless your new flooring has a manufacturer’s approval for installation over the existing floor. If you remove the carpet we recommend protecting your door, because the carpet back can be very rough and damage the surface. You can cut the carpet into strips for easy handling. A good idea is to use some carpet to wrap the tack strip in—that will help you avoid getting hurt by the sharp spikes. Remove an existing bottom or quarter round. To do this, cut the top of the base or a quarter round with a sharp knife. Cut through any caulk or paint to separate without damaging the paint. When it comes to installing your new base, we recommend choosing a higher one to cover the color line left from the removal. Undercut the door jambs—try using a jamb saw for the cleanest line. An easy way to help make sure your cuts are accurate is to use a cut-out of the material you’re building, plus an extra 1/16 inch shim. Always check the phone alarms and don’t disconnect them. You need to check your door clearance if you are moving to a thick floor, because you have to cut your door. Sometimes, removing your door temporarily can make the whole installation process easier. Prepare Your Subfloor: Always take good care of your subfloor because if it is not properly prepared, bad things can happen in your finished flooring. Your subfloor should be clean and flat. We recommend installing an underlayment to help even the remaining minor imperfections. Some flooring planks come with an attached cushion, but you should always take advantage of the additional benefits that the lower price will provide. Subfloors should be flat within 1/8 inch over 6 feet long and 3/16 inch over 10 feet long – You can use a long, straight edge 6 feet long or more to check your subfloor is flat. Make sure your subfloor is flat—you can use 15-30 lb. The roof needs to be filled in the lower part. If your subfloor is wood: Check for squeaks and nails in loose sections. Sand or plane the high places and fill the low places with a suitable place. Do not use poly or fully packaged Homelux over wood subfloors. If your subfloor is concrete: Grind all the high areas, and fill in the low areas with a suitable cement-based or self-leveler and allow to cure completely. If you are installing concrete, a moisture barrier such as 6 mil poly or Dreamhome underlayment is a must.
It’s worth taking the time to condition your floors before installing them. For example, it takes 24 to 48 hours or more for engineered wood to adjust to the environmental conditions of your site, but it is necessary to reduce the risk of your flooring buckling, cupping, warping, or gapping down the line. This flooring should not be placed in the kitchen or other permanent rooms. Remember, it’s a floating base—it should be free to expand and contract.
Be sure to check your flooring installation manual to determine the type of locking system it uses, or the method for floating adhesives, and for specific instructions for the type of flooring. For a complete installation, we recommend using spacers to give your plans the expansion they need. If you are installing a wooden or wood-like floor, we recommend mixing your plans out of several boxes and choosing a randomized installation to create a good and realistic look. If you are installing a base or quarter round, using an 18-gauge pneumatic finish nailer and miter saw will make it easier. Walls are not always perfectly square, so check the corners of your cuts to make sure they fit. You may want to consider writing cut in corners. For a clean finish, caulk around the top of your foundation or trim. You can cover the nail holes and corners with the same color, or fill in and paint. Carefully cut and install a replacement, and re-hang your doors if you remove them for ease of installation. We recommend installing the pads on your furniture before you move it back into place – they will help protect your beautiful new floors.
