Home Improvement In My Area – I’ve been quite busy with the Home Improvement Program (HIP) offered by the Housing Council of Singapore which aimed to solve maintenance problems faced by flats built before 1986; the most important of which would be a massive overhaul of the two toilets!
While my own flat had already been on the program before I bought it two years ago, that’s not the case with my parents’ flat as they only received the notice last year (I think) with work starting last Thursday.

I had to help because we had so many things to clean up and most importantly, I had to hang plastic sheets so that the items are protected from dust and debris. Honestly, I’m so glad I didn’t have to go through that ordeal.

It is extremely hard work to hang the sheets and as close friends know, I am by far the clumsiest person in Singapore; it’s a miracle I lasted this long!
Three hours; and my father and I only finished the kitchen, master bedroom, and television console. We didn’t even have enough plastic sheets to cover the main altar and couch. It didn’t help that the tapes didn’t adhere fantastically to the wall tiles and ceiling!
And given my age, it was breaking back! However, compared to my 66-year-old father, I think it is still safer for me to sit on the ladder and in a high chair; despite my clumsiness.
Since I said goodbye on purpose the next morning, I arrived at my parents’ house having bought extra plastic sheets and tape; only to realize that some sheets had come loose and we had to re-tape them! After trial and error the night before, we were much faster at masking the plates with the stronger masking tape recommended by the paint shop.

Too bad we weren’t as quick as the workers who quickly laid the floor with protection and set up more plastic sheeting (examined with posts) to protect our furniture; the couch was already dropped off and I made the “executive” decision to just leave it “uncovered”.
Dad gives a thumbs up; hoping that the minor renovation will go without a hitch as the poor man has to say goodbye to ‘jaga’ the house.
Anyway, just two pictures of the empty toilets; one in the kitchen and one in the bedroom. Rarely seen this empty and definitely looking forward to their new ‘look’ in two weeks!
