Can I Install Laminate Flooring Over Carpet – If you haven’t seen my first post about my bedroom renovation plans and a couple of before pictures, you can check it out here.
The room is about halfway done and I have a lot to tell you, but I thought I’d start with the most experimental part of the room and the part that got the most questions, the performance.
Can I Install Laminate Flooring Over Carpet
For a long time I just assumed there was nothing I could do to update the floors when I rented, but I always envisioned beautiful wood floors throughout the house! The idea came when I was looking for outdoor flooring for someone else and came across those temporary dance floors that click together for an event like a wedding… put it up in an hour and take it down at the end of the night. I was wondering if this would work in our bedroom or if there is another version of this for renters.
How To Install Laminate Flooring
I did find a few other floor tiles, but none of them were particularly good. Most of them looked really fake or too bulky, so I shelved the idea for a while, but from time to time I scoured the internet for other options.
During one of my viewing sessions, I found someone who used vinyl flooring (the kind you usually install after you rip out the old carpet) but just laid it on top of their carpet and that was it. (!!!) I found another couple who put thin pieces of plywood over their carpet and vinyl flooring over that for something a little sturdier. I realized that this was exactly the solution I was looking for (FINALLY).
Since our carpet is low pile (super short/flat) and durable, I decided to try the easiest and cheapest way to just put the floor directly on top of the carpet, thinking I could add plywood underneath later if needed.
Role (It arrived over a week late, but Home Depot’s customer service was incredible and they refunded a ton of the value to make up for it). It was pretty heavy, but mostly it was very, very long, and I didn’t pay for a service to carry it upstairs to my bedroom (maybe I should have) because I didn’t realize how heavy it would be. Fortunately, I had the help of my husband and a friend, but there was still a lot to figure out. At one point we took one end of the floor out through the upstairs window to fit around the corner in the bedroom.
Where Can I Install Laminate?
We eventually figured it out, but if that doesn’t work for you, another option is to roll it out and cut it into pieces that fit. I’m not sure it would sit well on the carpet if it was made up of multiple pieces.
Since it was one big roll, all I had to do was take it to my bedroom, roll it out on the floor, and then cut the excess off the sides. One of the reasons I chose this floor was that it was almost the same size as my room – just a few extra inches on either side.
It was difficult to do completely by myself, but it would probably be easy enough with one person. The biggest challenge was getting the floor under the bed because I didn’t have room to move it out of the room (ha), but obviously if you take all the furniture out it’s a lot easier.
Once everything was unfolded, I used a floor knife (under $5!) to cut the two sides for extra length. To be honest, my cuts are very uneven and look awful, but they’re both mostly covered by my bed and some other furniture, so I’m not too worried about it. I’ve tried all kinds of techniques, but I still don’t know how to cut more evenly. Normally, if you installed a floor like this the normal way, part of it would be covered by the baseboard that you add after the floor, but this is not the case! I’m sure YouTube has some ideas on how to make more even cuts.

The last thing that was a big problem was getting the air “bubbles” out from under the floor. Surprisingly, the floor doesn’t squish too much from being stepped on (yes), but heavy furniture tends to dent to some extent, so moving any furniture across the floor causes the floor to move and become uneven. We were able to fix most of it, but it was definitely a two-man job as the floor is heavy, especially with furniture on it. If you set it all up and then lift all the furniture instead of pushing/dragging, then you should be mostly fine. There are still a few bubbles all over the floor that we can’t get out – you can’t really see them but you just feel them when you walk on them.
All in all, it’s definitely not as amazing as actually getting a new hardwood floor installed properly, but it changed the feel of the room 100% and I’m SO glad we decided to do it. If you’re into details when it comes to getting things done right, you’re probably going to be a little annoyed to be honest, but personally I’m more influenced by how my room looks than the actual quality of each item, so yeah that i love her I hope to be able to do this to the rest of the house one day and definitely plan to roll the floor back up and take it with us when we move somewhere one day. I’d also like to try other options, like faux tile flooring. I love this one for a retro feel and this one for a Spanish style home!
A lot more has been done since the flooring (like a faux brick wall, new bedding, and some updated nightstands) so I’ll be posting about all of that soon. Stay connected!
I’m slowly getting over my fear of the hardware store, so I’m going to start including buying tips for each project so you know exactly what to ask for when you go in or order online!
How To Install Pergo Flooring: Easy Diy From Start To Finish
2. Look for flooring in rolls, not individual tiles. Keywords to look for are “sheet wood,” “full roll,” or “sheet vinyl,” and the dimensions in the description should be several feet, not just a few inches. For example, it’s a big roll (good) and it’s individual tiles (bad).
3. Most flooring can be ordered as fabric – they come in one fixed width, but then you choose how long you want the piece to be. They are often set by the linear foot, so if you add 1 to your cart, you are adding a piece that is one foot long. Several floors on the Home Depot website have a calculator listed, so you can simply enter your floor area and it will tell you what to order. I understand why it was done. It’s cheap, neutral, easy to install, and as long as people take off their shoes and eat like mature adults, it can work. It is clear that children are not taken into account when making this choice. I gave up my easy-to-clean thin concrete driveway and wood-floored dining room to move to the city. I was terrified of what would happen to the carpet in our apartment, and I was horrified at the thought of having to live with my failures to keep it clean.
I looked at Apartment Therapy and Googled “flooring over carpet” or “temporary dining room flooring” but only two main suggestions kept coming up.
I found the perfect solution by accident – or divine intervention – while browsing a non-profit art thrift store. Basically a store full of organized junk and random leftovers that are sold for pennies to creative people for art projects. Deep in the back, in a basket filled with curled up pieces, was this thick, beautiful bamboo. For $10 each I took all 4 rolls home thinking I would re-donate them if they didn’t fit. Six months later, they are still exceeding my wildest expectations.
How Much Does It Cost To Install Vinyl Plank Flooring? (2023)
The bad news is that I can’t say the exact brand, source, or true value of what I have. I found something on Amazon that looks very similar – $78 for an 8 x 4 foot bamboo wall panel with free shipping. If you take my advice and buy them, please let me know if I’m pointing people in the right direction.
Bamboo slats can be purchased in any direction. If you plan to make an 8′ by 8′ square rug under the dining room table, make sure the slats run the full 8′.
