Favorite project EVER! Okay, I say that about probably 50% of every project we do around here, but this one is definitely up there on the charts of most transformative-for-the-least-money.

If you’ve been following along on our master bathroom refresh, Robert and I painted the walls, trim, and cabinetry by last weekend. But the ceramic tile floor still looked like this:
Laying Vinyl Plank Flooring Over Existing Tiles
Although in the past we had saved the ceramic tile in our kitchen and hallway floor with the help of Grout Pen, this floor was a little further away. And since we’re staying with the existing countertop in the shower (until a real gut/renovation down the road), I wanted a floor that would modernize the 80’s beige a little better.
Unless I wanted to avoid the tile paint and stencil route, as so many DIYers have done here lately. With a 3 month old in the house, I didn’t like the idea of smoke and I wanted this job to be quick and the installation done in a matter of an hour or two.
Normally, if you are doing a major renovation, I would NOT suggest putting vinyl flooring on top of tile. I think for a permanent floor, it should be done the “right” way. But for a quick Phase 1 fix, it’s a great DIY-able solution to tide you over until you’re ready for a messy contractor job.
So if you want to do the same with some of your existing tile floors that have seen better days, here’s how we did it.

2. When the mortar is dry in about 24-48 hours, you can sand any rough spots with medium grit sandpaper.
3. Sweep the floor and remove any dirt with a dust pan, as you don’t want anything to fall under your sheet vinyl floor.
4. Remove quarter rounds and baseboards with a crowbar and mallet or hammer. Here’s a post to help you with that if you’ve never done it before. Set the quarter round trim and baseboards aside to reinstall after the sheet vinyl is in (assuming they are in good condition).
5. Measure all the edges around the room and draw a diagram of your room on a piece of paper with those measurements. Never a dull moment with this guy around, even with daily custom jobs. ?
Can I Install Vinyl Floors Under Cabinets?
Also take measurements of any obstacles in the room. We removed our old toilet before (this is a great toilet removal video with a good tip to avoid water dripping everywhere), so we measured where to cut a hole in our sheet vinyl for that as well.
7. Roll out your sheet of vinyl and take a nap. I’m kidding. ? Well…if you do, we won’t blame you. But at least roll out the sheet of vinyl (DO NOT flip it upside down to measure/cut in the next step).
8. Use your diagram as a reference to mark your measurements with the tape measure on the edges of the sheet of vinyl to create a template.
10. And cut the sheet of vinyl with sharp scissors or a utility knife. After your floor is cut, wipe off any remaining chalk line (Mr. Clean Magic Erasers work great).

11. Take your cut sheet vinyl into the room and roll it out. Trim any remaining spots with a utility knife as needed as you position it in the room.
12. Install your baseboards and quarter round trim using a nail gun to hold the edges of your floor in place. (This was according to our manufacturer’s instructions for our specific vinyl floor, but the manufacturer of your floor may require you to apply an adhesive first.)
13. Then, apply white silicone caulk to fill cracks on the reinstalled trim. And attach sheet vinyl edging where it meets a shower/tub/door threshold as well.
But with the mix of warm and cool tones in this floor, I feel like it makes the blue and beige cohesive.

So now the next thing on the agenda is to fix it up, put on some paint, and install a new toilet (because the old one absolutely has to be pulled out for good).
I’m going to paint the Benjamin Moore fireplace door this week to match the rest of the ones in the house, which are already the deep charcoal color.
And I’m hanging a window screen so the whole neighborhood doesn’t get a peep show when we actually get to use this bathroom again. Ha!
I’m still debating whether to hang a long shower curtain in front of this shower door to camouflage it though. What do you think? Cover or leave?

After we finished our basement family room remodel, I was definitely done with the floors not matching.
In the basement we tore out the nasty old carpet and replaced it with luxury vinyl flooring. We chose a floor for high humidity environments that is installed directly on the concrete floor.
But when we replaced that floor, we only had enough material to cover the main room and hallway. That left the bathroom, 2 bedrooms and kitchenette with the original carpet.

After a long search that took a lot of patience, I finally found a store that sells the same floor at a deep discount.
And the basement bathroom also had rugs that I couldn’t wait to get rid of. So we installed these tiles in that room as well.
It was a blow to the group, friend! I thought we were in trouble because our vinyl plank flooring was supposed to be installed directly on a concrete sub-floor.
The main thing to consider when installing floor coverings over existing floors is to make sure the floor is properly prepared and that you have all the right materials.
Things To Know About Peel And Stick Flooring
Most existing standard sheet vinyl is installed on a level subsurface. So you shouldn’t take an extra step to make your floor level.
But if you find that there are significant low spots in your current floor, you may want to use a self-leveling compound to fix those spots.
Our existing linoleum floor was not in excellent condition, but we found it to be in good condition for this small area.
It is a good idea to prepare the floor to make sure that there is no layer of wax or grease stains on the linoleum, which can cause the glue not to stick.

So the first thing to do is give the soil a good scrub with TSP – or Trisodium Phosphate.
This is a strong chemical, so make sure to wear gloves and eye protection, but it should do the trick!
Also check with the manufacturer’s guidelines to see if they recommend any additional steps for preparing your existing subfloor.
If your old floor is in good shape, you should be able to lay the new vinyl tile right over it.
How To Secure Vinyl Floor Tile That Is Not Sticking
Depending on the age of the linoleum, it may contain asbestos and you definitely don’t want to tear that up if you don’t have to!
We have installed 3 different types of floors, and each time, the manufacturer gives detailed steps on where to place the first plank in a room, but it varies with the type of floor and with each manufacturer.
If this is the start of any peel and stick vinyl flooring in your home, you’ll want to go to the center of the room and create lines for you to follow. You then install the first row from the center point working your way out to the walls.
The reason you want to do this is to make sure you have a straight line
when you lay the first tile.
Guide To Lay Vinyl Flooring Over Floorboards?
Since we are continuing this floor from our basement family room, we can continue our vinyl plank flooring from the last row we installed.
After pulling up the rest of our floating floor, we found that the linoleum did not cover all of the concrete slab in this room.
We scraped and sanded off the old extra glue that the old installers applied to the concrete many moons ago.
TIP: If the backing of your new vinyl floor is a strong adhesive like ours, wearing rubber gloves will help control how much glue gets on your hands.
Groutable Vinyl Tile (an Easy Installation)
We decided not to use a floor roller, and found that the use of painter’s tape worked well for some complicated tiles.
Our floors have quite the adhesive. We found that we had to use denatured alcohol to remove where the glue was transferred from our fingers to the top of the vinyl tiles.
