Use a belt sander to smooth out small bumps, tape corners that are peeling, remove loose tiles and give the floor a good clean. For larger imperfections, such as holes or spots left after removing a loose tile, use a straight-edged trowel to apply a coat of relief leveler. Allow the floor to dry before installing the new floor.

Until 1986, asbestos was added to many linoleum sheets or tile floors. You don’t need to call an asbestos abatement company to remove it, as it is safe until the particles are disturbed. Covering it is perfectly acceptable, but don’t cut into it or use a sander to smooth out rough spots. If you find that the condition of the floor prevents it from being covered with new flooring, put on gloves and a face mask, take a small sample and send it to a lab for testing before spending money on asbestos abatement. Normally, if you were doing a major renovation, I would NOT suggest putting vinyl flooring over tile. I think for a permanent floor, it should be done the “right” way. But for a quick phase 1 fix, it’s a great DIY solution that will see you through until you’re ready for a messy contractor job.

So if you’re looking to do the same to some of your existing tile floors that have seen better days, here’s how we did it.

7. Lay out the vinyl sheet and take a nap. I was joking. ? Well… if you do, we won’t blame you. But at least lay out the vinyl sheet (DO NOT turn it upside down to measure/cut in the next step).

8. Use your chart as a reference to mark measurements using the tape measure on the edges of the vinyl sheet to create a template.

10. And cut the vinyl sheet with sharp scissors or a utility knife. After the floor is cut, erase any remaining chalk lines (Mr. Clean Magic Erasers wor

11. Drag the cut vinyl sheet into the chamber and roll it. Trim any remaining spots with a utility knife as needed as you position it in the chamber.

12. Reinstall baseboards and quarter round trim with a nail gun to hold floor edges in place. (This was according to our manufacturer’s instructions for our specific vinyl floor, but your floor manufacturer may require you to apply an adhesive first.)

13. Next, apply white silicone to fill the cracks on the reinstalled trim. And attach the sheet vinyl trim where it meets a shower/tub/door sill.

But with the mix of warm and cool tones in this floor, I feel like it makes the blue and beige come together.

So now next on the agenda is to fix up, touch up some paint and install a new toilet (because the old one was in desperate need of being taken out for good).
