There are many benefits to using luxury vinyl planks (LVP) in your home. Want to look like wood but need something more durable? LVP is the perfect choice. And it’s so easy to install. You can use a utility knife to score and cut it if you don’t have a saw and you can only make light cuts. Here’s a step-by-step guide to installing luxury vinyl plank flooring.
Floor Preparation For Vinyl Plank Flooring
Do you have children or pets? Then you need something sturdy. Are you considering new commercial flooring? You’ll need something that will last. Luxury vinyl planks check all those boxes because they give you the look of wood without the care and worry of real wood.
Vinyl Plank Installation: How To Install Vinyl Plank Flooring On Concrete
Two and a half years ago I installed the Lifeproof brand in my home. I recently decided to expand LVP to another room in my house. I bought the same brand and color from Home Depot. The original floor from March 2020 looks exactly the same as the new floor I installed in October 2022. This floor holds up so well. It still looks like a new floor. Check out my review of it here.
Lifeproof has an improved wear-resistant layer with ceramic ball technology to protect against scratches and increase durability. They process it “ultra fresh”, that is, a product that prevents the development of mold and fungus. Also, it comes with a liner.
Another reason I’m a big fan of Lifeproof LVP is that it’s waterproof for up to 36 hours. You can place it in your kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, or wherever you want and you’ll know it’s going to last.
You can install this over an existing floor, such as vinyl or tile, or directly over wood or concrete. Make sure the surface is level and free of debris.
How To Prepare A Vinyl Floor For Ceramic Tile
When installing in a kitchen or bathroom, install the cabinets first and then install the LVP around them. Remove all plinths and base trim.
Start by measuring the length of the room and divide it by the length of the boards. Leave a 1/4″ gap on both ends using 1/4″ tile spacers. If this number is less than 8 inches, you will need to cut the first board. This avoids boards less than 8 inches on the opposite side of the room.
Next, measure the width of the room and divide it by the width of the board. If the number is less than half the width of the board, you need to cut the first and last row to the same width.
For simple cuts, all you need is a utility knife to cut the board right side up. Use a ruler to get an even score. Then snap the board back in place and cut out the backing.
Rigid Core Vinyl Plank Flooring: Why You Want It Now
For more difficult cuts, such as around an HVAC vent or a door opening, you can also use a utility knife for these cuts. Or use a jigsaw or table saw. Keep extra blades handy for your utility knife as you will need to replace them often.
Start by using 1/4 inch spacers between the wall and the first row of boards. Start the installation from the left corner with the tab against the wall. When starting the first row, lock the first two boards in place. The grooves in the boards lock and you’ll know they’re tight when the boards lie flat against the seam.
As for joining the long and short seam, join the long side first. Then slide the board to meet the short sides, lower and lock the short ends. Finally, use a dull hammer to lightly tap the short ends into place, along with the tapping block to ensure a snug fit against the long seams. You may also need a puller to tighten long seams in places where a thread block won’t fit.
Continue stacking boards until the row is complete. When starting the second row, be sure to arrange the stitches in a checkerboard pattern. Score and cut 8 inches from the first board of the second row and work your way down from there. Attach the cut edge to the wall. Space each row 8 inches apart. The boards are 48 inches long, so you get 6 rows before the seam pattern repeats.
Can You Install Vinyl Plank Flooring Over Tile?
When cutting around non-standard objects, use paper to outline and create a pattern. Trace this pattern on the board and make cuts.
For an easy transition between LVP and carpet or LVP and tile, Lifeproof offers several different transitions.
And that’s all. By taking the time to do it yourself, you can get the new flooring of your dreams and save a lot of money on labor.
