Brent Smith, who also owns Furniture Mattress Warehouse in Clemmons, promises beautiful furniture at great prices. His inventory includes market samples, specialty purchases, and furniture lines he has had as a sales representative in the industry for the past 25 years.
“Many of the companies I’ve worked with over the years would rather sell to me than go to another retailer to sell their products,” Smith said. Those connections have allowed him to stock enough quality furniture to maintain what he estimates to be at least a ninety percent difference between the two stores.
He expects the Mocksville store to have more than 30 different queen-size mattress sets as well as a large selection of dining room furniture, much of which will be wood.
Smith grew up in the furniture business. His grandfather, Johnny Smith, and parents, JT Smith Jr. and Martha Smith, owned a retail furniture store and re-upholstery store in the Sheffield community of Davie County.

By age 12 he was pricing re-upholstery jobs for customers, and he made his first major solo retail sale at age 13. “I still remember selling a couch, chairs, coffee table, two end tables, and two lamps for $750,” Smith said with a smile.
Smith spent six years at Haverty’s in Charlotte and then seven years selling mattresses in Serta before becoming a sales representative for several furniture manufacturers. In 2008, he began importing leather furniture on his own, which evolved into owning a small retail store in the old Hendricks Furniture building in Mocksville. After 3 ½ years in business, he closed that store in 2012 to open a larger store in Clemmons.
Now, though he’s already “burning the candle at both ends,” working full-time as a sales representative selling furniture and mattresses at retail stores in North and South Carolina and owning a retail store, Smith Realized that the time was right to open a second one. Store in Mocksville.
“I wanted to do another store for a long time because I already had the inventory to do another store,” Smith said. His previous experience in Mocksville and the fact that he lives in Advance made it a natural location for the new store.

He was pleased to find the perfect location in Eastgate Shopping Center. “I thought this place was part of Peebles,” he said. “When I walked in and saw the square footage, I was amazed, and the loading dock made it perfect.
Since Smith already has a full-time job, the store will be managed by AJ Carter, also from Davie County.
Like his family store years ago, Furniture Mattress Warehouse is also a family business. Her daughter Rachel (19) started working weekends at the Claymons store when she was fifteen. Now that she is in East Carolina, Brooke (17), a student at Davie High, has taken her sister’s place. Smith’s wife, Jenna, is a 5th grade teacher at Shady Grove.
