Voting begins at Home Depot in Northeast Philadelphia, where more than 260 employees are eligible to vote on whether to join Home Depot Workers United, a new independent group formed at the store. The results are expected on Saturday evening.
If the union wins, it will mark a historic moment for the nation’s largest home improvement retailer. And it would add another name to this year’s list of chains facing the first unions: Amazon, Starbucks, Chipotle, Trader Joe’s, REI, Medieval Times and Apple stores.
Labor organizers typically face high hurdles when companies can organize mandatory meetings and other efforts to discourage unionization.
Only one of five union elections at Amazon has been successful so far, and the company is still fighting for its only union victory. At Trader Joe’s, the union lost the New York election after two wins in Massachusetts and Minnesota.

Vincent Quiles, an organizer at Home Depot in Philadelphia, told reporters that his initial union petition included more than 100 signatures in support. But he also described a generational divide at the shop with younger workers who tend to be more excited about unionizing and older workers who tend to be less.
A Home Depot spokesman said the company respects the right to unionize, but does not see it as “the best solution for its staff.”

“Our open door policy is designed to reassure all associates that they can bring concerns directly to management, and we have the ability to successfully work with our associates to resolve them,” the retailer said in a statement.
Previously, 60 home depot delivery drivers in San Diego unionized in 2019, which the Teamsters said marked the first time the company’s employees had joined a union.
Historically, labor groups have struggled to gain ground in retail, where 4.4% of workers are unionized.
