The first gardening book I ever bought was by Mel Bartholomew. I remember reading it cover to cover and then rereading it. He gave me hope that I could garden. Square Foot Gardening simplifies the process of how to start gardening.

Plant Partners: Science-Based Companion Planting Strategies for the Vegetable Garden by Jessica Walliser is a science-based approach to companion planting.
What I love about this book is the specifics of how the plants interact with each other. This guide suggests specific plant combinations that improve soil health and increase biodiversity, resulting in real and measurable impacts in the garden.
Edward C. Smith’s The Vegetable Gardener’s Bible is another book that you can read cover to cover. There is much wisdom between these pages. A ‘comprehensive gardening book’ is a good way to describe this book. The format makes it easy to understand.

It’s easy to pick up a book and read about growing a particular fruit or vegetable. His writing style is easy to understand with step-by-step directions and plenty of illustrations.
Vegetables Love Flowers: Companion Planting for Beauty and Bounty by Lisa Mason Ziegler is a newcomer to my favorite books, but it has definitely earned its place. It is full of beautiful illustrations and easy to understand.
The book includes companion planting and tips for attracting bees and pollinators, and a planting schedule. It addresses all areas of gardening with an emphasis on obtaining and maintaining healthy soil.
Rodel’s Garden Answers: Vegetables, Fruits and Herbs is a great guide to everyday questions about gardening. It’s easy to jump to your question regarding vegetables, fruits or herbs using the index at the back.
New Design And Gardening Books To Read This Month
This book is a good resource for solving gardening problems. Tips are included for making the necessary changes so the same problem doesn’t happen again. Lots of pictures including images of seeds, seedlings and transplants for plant identification. A very useful resource book.
How to Grow Your Own Food: A Beginner’s Guide to Container Gardening by Angela Judd (that’s me!). This book teaches you what you need to know and do to start gardening.
There are definitive growing guides for 50 different vegetables, herbs, fruits and edible flowers. There are also detailed care instructions and beautiful pictures of each plant.

It’s definitely worth taking a look at a few Aussie permaculture books. A lot of similar climate programs. One I can definitely recommend is Linda Woodrow’s The Permaculture Home Garden.
