How To Put Down Floating Laminate Flooring
So I came home with a partially finished floor and a garage full of laminate flooring! It is not surprising to hear that.
How To Install Laminate Flooring
When it comes to the actual installation of floating click and lock flooring, it’s actually quite simple. Here are some things to remember:
There should be about a ¼” – ½” gap between the laminate floor and all of your walls. (Your specific laminate floor instructions should list the actual gap size, so please always read and follow those instructions!) Wood expands and contracts, so you need to allow for this space as it expands.
Boards should be nice and tight between all long and short sides. That’s what you use your tapping block and hammer (or mallet) for. But the planks are not tight enough to start hooking.
You’ll need to alternate the boards so that all the seams don’t end up in the same place. A general guideline I like to follow is to do your first row and whatever piece you have left at the end, no matter how long or short, is your starting piece for the second row. There’s really no reason to deviate from this guideline unless you have an area where your seams will start to line up (ie they’ll start doing this on a long corridor). The main goal is to keep your seams consistent without too much work, effort or wood, so this method always works.
How To Install Laminate Floors In Your Home
To install, you start with one wall and line up your first row of laminate flooring lengthwise against your wall.
You’ll fit the tongue and groove of each board along the short ends, using a taping block and a hammer (or mallet) to make sure the edges are snug against each other.
At the end of the row, the last board should often be shortened. It should be measured and cut carefully.
Take this extra piece from the end of the first row and use it to start your second row. Make sure the short side seams don’t match the row before or after it.
Fitting Hardwood Floor To Concrete
If the tapping block doesn’t work, you may need to use your pull bar to help fit the last board of the row. (ie the wall is in the way)
At the end of the second row, you’ll use your tapping block or pull bar and hammer to join the long and short ends together as you go. Go smooth and slow. If you go too fast or too hard, you can end up with chipped pieces of laminate, so take your time.
There are of course exceptions to every rule! Odd corners, angles or door jams can cause you trouble. Use your measuring tape, triangle, and pencil/sharpie to mark each of the cuts you need to make. Use whatever saw you have to make the correct cuts.
You may need to go back a few places, put things in a strange order, or make other pieces into oddly shaped dots that fit tightly.
Shrinking Floating Floor Cause And Effect
We have a lot of corners, angles and door jams, so we encountered a lot of tricky situations. There are times when we have to install flooring up to a certain area, then take out two whole rows to fit a certain area, then try to put two rows back in place. Oops.
You should see some of the crazy cuts my husband had to do in some of our angles! This is crazy!
One of the things we run into over and over again is door jams (we have a lot of doors and cupboards!). As I mentioned earlier, we did not remove our molding or door jams prior to installation. So, to install laminate flooring under the door jamb, we need to trim our door jambs and small moldings.
If you choose not to remove the door jambs, you should do so for a nice, clean, professional-looking installation.
Flooring Installation Made Easy
We used a wire oscillating multi-tool and it worked perfectly! We also used laminate flooring for our height guide and cut the molding right away! Simple, but it makes a huge difference in how good the end result will be!
If you have a square or rectangular room with no doors, shelves, islands, or corners (except the four corners), you’ve got the easiest installation in the world!
However, if you have 7 doors, lots of crazy-angled walls, odd nooks, kitchen cabinets and an island… installing your flooring may take some time, creativity and persistence!!
