Laying Vinyl Flooring Over Tile – All the supplies and steps you need to install vinyl flooring over an old tile yourself for a temporary fix.
Favorite project EVER! Well, I’d say about 50% of every project we do here, but this is definitely one of the most-convertible-for-low-cost schemes out there.
Laying Vinyl Flooring Over Tile
If you’ve been following our master bathroom renovation, Robert and I had the walls, trim, and cabinets painted by the end of this past week. But the ceramic tile floor still looked like this:
Luxury Vinyl Tile Over Existing Flooring One Year Review
Even though we’ve saved our kitchen and bathroom with ceramic tile grout before, this floor seemed a bit off. And since we currently have the countertops and bathroom (unless there’s a real gut/renovation down the road), I wanted a floor that would update the 80’s vibe a little better.
Except I wanted to stay away from the paint on stickers and stencil route like so many DIYers are doing here lately. With a 3 month old in the house, I didn’t like the idea of fumes and I wanted the job to be quick and the installation done in an hour or two.
In general, if you were doing a major renovation, I would NOT recommend putting vinyl flooring over the tile. I think that for a lasting layer, it has to be done the “right” way. But for a quick Phase 1 fix, it’s a great DIY solution to keep you going until you’re ready for a messy contractor job.
So if you want to do the same thing to some of your existing wardrobes that have seen better days, here’s how we did it.
How To Lay A Vinyl Tile Floor
2. After 24-48 hours of drying time, you can dry any spots with medium grit paper.
3. Mop the floor and dust off any debris because you don’t want to leave anything under your vinyl floor.
4. Remove the circles and quarter wings with a punch and a hammer or hammer. Here’s a post to help you out, if you haven’t already. Set the quarter round and base pipes aside to reinstall after the sheet vinyl is in (assuming they are in good condition).
5. Measure all the edges around the room and draw a diagram of your room on a piece of paper with those measurements. With this man around, there is never a dull moment even with the daily measuring tasks. ?

Include the dimensions of any obstructions in the room. We already removed our old toilet (here’s a great toilet removal video with good advice on how to keep water from leaking everywhere), so we figured we’d cut a hole in our sheet vinyl for that as well.
7. Apply your sheet vinyl and sleep. Just kidding. ? Well… we wouldn’t blame you if you did. But at least remove the sheet vinyl (don’t turn it upside down for measuring/cutting in the next step).
8. Use your diagram as a reference to mark your measurements using a tape measure along the edges of the vinyl sheet to create a template.
10. And cut the sheet vinyl with sharp scissors or a utility knife. After your floor is cut, erase any remaining glue line (Mr. Clean Magic Erasers work great).

11. Pull your cut sheet vinyl into the room and peel it off. As you place it inside the room, trim the rest of the space with a utility knife as needed.
12. Reinstall your baseboards and quarter panels with a nail gun to hold the floor edges in place. (This was according to our manufacturer’s instructions for our particular vinyl flooring, but your flooring manufacturer may require you to apply adhesive first.)
13. Next, apply a white silicone paper to fill the cracks on the re-installed design. And the vinyl trim where it meets the shower door/shower/door as well.
But with the mix of warm and cool tones in this layer, I feel like it blends blue and beige together.
Luxury Vinyl Tile And Plank Installation Methods
So now on the agenda is to plug it in, get some paint, and install a new handrail (since the old one absolutely needed to be taken out for good).
I will be painting the door Benjamin Moore Wrought Iron this week to match the rest of the house which is already that deep charcoal color.
And I’m going to hang a window shade so the whole neighborhood doesn’t have a sheepish view when we actually get to use this bathroom again. Ha!
I continue to debate whether I should hang a long shower curtain over the bathroom door to camouflage it. What do you think? Hide it or leave it?
Can You Put Vinyl Flooring Over Wood Or Tile?
We are finally here at home! And then we’re going to prepare for our first major renovation elsewhere in the house that I can’t wait to show you. Eek!!! One thing at a time though. Today I’m sharing how we installed new vinyl plank flooring over our existing ceramic floor with just a few simple steps to make sure it was properly level. We used Gold Choice Vinyl Plank in Smokey Barrel.
When things suddenly and drastically changed this spring with the pandemic and our spring break vacations were canceled, we decided to tackle some home projects. We hadn’t decided if we were going to replace all the tile in our basement because it seemed like too big of a job since the ceramic was laid directly on top of the concrete. But we also knew that we really wanted to change and update the look of the basement as well as create a consistent room option throughout the space. The old floor was uneven, hard to clean, hard on the feet and cold in winter. It was also not exactly our choice of style and color.
In January I had all the walls repainted white and we added a feature wall of wallpaper. I had also bought some area rugs to cover the strong wind and heat up this space, which certainly worked well as a temporary measure.
But when we decided to redo the family room, updating the ceiling, flooring and trim, the project kind of snowballed into all the common areas of the basement and the basement.
How To Lay Vinyl Flooring
We went to Costco just before everything really took off due to the pandemic and bought enough boxes of Gold Choice Vinyl Plank flooring (at Smokey Barrel) to cover the entire basement except for three bedrooms that have reasonably good carpet. (and that makes things warmer in the winter). We also could have ordered Golden Choice from Costco online, but were impatient to get started!
Before we started, we removed the sheets under the wall and made sure to vacuum and clean our floors thoroughly.
I bought this premium patch kit from my local hardware store and mixed it according to the package instructions. Since our tile had a faux-slate texture, we wanted to sand it down before installing the vinyl on top.
I used a wide spreader knife to apply the compound to the knots of the walnut and any areas that were lacking, making sure to spread it evenly and remove any excess product.
Things You Need To Know Before Buying Vinyl Flooring
Since we had already installed vinyl flooring in the family room, we lined the floorboards with that door to continue the line. We put it first, back from the family room door, to determine how wide our first piece needed to be.
You can see below, where the door is open on the left side of the photo above, how we lined up the panels so they were in a straight line and flowed from the hallway to the downstairs family room. We then used a transition ring because the two rooms were slightly different in height, but we still wanted the planks to be straight between the two rooms.
Installation went much faster than we expected, as we had a few small cuts to make.
We encountered some spots that were not level, so it was important to prepare the floor with a patch kit to ensure that the vinyl plank was installed on a level surface. We needed to do it where a room stood before going into the furnace/mechanical room in the basement.

We were very pl
eased with how easy it was to install this vinyl plank flooring (read more details and installation tips in this post).
You can also watch the video I made with our tips – the process is the same as making sure your floor is completely level (and adding as needed) when running directly over an old tile floor!
No matter how much white paint I used on the walls, and how much I cleaned the floor before, it always felt dirty and old. Having a uniform floor, easy to clean, beautiful subfloor, completely transformed the basement area!
We shared how we put the same layer directly on the concrete
