“The Living Landscape Hall of Gardens was a natural progression of the relationship between the Ottawa chapter—with great support from Permalink—and the Ottawa Home and Garden Show,” explains Sandora Alford-Prowse, CLD, BCIN. , and president of the Ottawa chapter of LO. “It was a big job, but it was also a great opportunity to increase the public recognition of the Landscape Ontario brand and our members in the Eastern Ontario region.”
The ‘Garden of Knowledge – Choose Your Path’ was a joint presentation by the LO Ottawa and Upper Canada chapters. Lead creative and build team project co-managers were designer Alford-Purvis, of A Cultivated Art, along with build leader Paul Dornbusch, CLT, CLM of Thornbusch Landscaping and Upper Canada Chapter Secretary.
The intention of the ‘Choose Your Path’ garden was to encourage visitors to consider green careers by showcasing the range of skills and expertise required in landscaping and other green professions, where the demand for qualified personnel is high. Large-scale projects require multi-disciplinary teams to coordinate all the unique aspects of construction for aesthetic and environmental sustainability as well as long-term sustainability and maintenance. Design, lighting, engineering, irrigation, heavy equipment operation, architecture, plant care, biodiversity, habitat creation, green infrastructure, stormwater runoff, heat island effects – there’s an endless list of career opportunities for them. There are those who are team-oriented and who seek. Accommodating in a hands-on environment.
When asked why he agreed to build this way, Doornbos shared his big-picture thinking. “I want to be an active participant in demonstrating what makes our association great – teamwork, partnership, sharing, enthusiasm and professionalism. We achieve this not only in the LO garden, but all over the hall.” With garden builders.

“Landscape Ontario is an association of similar professional companies that agree to work to certain standards. There are many different career opportunities for young, old, and even second career people in the green professions and there are also many scholarship op
portunities available. Finally, for kids, building a sandbox inspires play, creativity, and dreams of what’s possible — and landscaping just as much for adults! Doornbos adds.
He continues, “In short, as an association, we must make it clear that we are not in the business of building gardens, but rather, we are a collaborative network of professionals who serve like-minded people. Connects to mutual improvement and shared goals. Customer benefit. We are the go-to source for landscape professionals and we can best promote our membership’s skills at these shows because they are on full display.
Thanks are extended to all the volunteers who built the LO feature garden and then returned to tear it down – as well as those who managed it during the show.
