Can You Put Flooring Over Carpet
Can You Put Flooring Over Carpet – After getting so much positive feedback and interest in our little laminate wood flooring installation project, we decided to do a follow up with a little time lapse video of how the floor removal process went. For part one, click here.
Our little experimental project consisted of installing a floating floor over the carpet in our apartment. We love the aesthetic, but mainly the dining area had carpet and we knew it wasn’t going to work, especially with three small children! So we covered the floor over it and it definitely made cleaning up after meals (and for that matter potty training) easier.

However, we weren’t sure at the time exactly how the carpet would look after years of pounding under layers of our flooring. Turns out, it looked great! MUCH better than if we had lived our daily lives trying to spot a cure in this area!
How To Lay Laminate Flooring Over Concrete And Transition To Carpet
In the video you will see J removing the boards followed by removing the sub-floor which was OSB and then vacuuming the carpet underneath.
Since we didn’t really document the initial process, we thought this video would be a nice way to see how it all came together. Even if it is about removal, just flip it to see how the deposit will work.
“Is it strong enough to use as a dance floor?” I do not know. Our three children ages 2, 5 and 7 have used it as a dance floor. It has held up pretty well, but it did show a little evidence of wear and tear after a while.
“Would it work for an upstairs apartment? How is the sound of the downstairs neighbors? If you are really concerned about noise, you can add a floor silencer underlay between the OSB and laminate boards. We lived in an upstairs apartment, so it’s definitely doable, but I guess it depends on how much you prioritize volume control.
Laminate Flooring For Basements
That’s pretty much it. We eventually got our full deposit back after moving in and the carpet looked like new. I can assure you this would not have happened if we hadn’t laid the floors. And the best part is that we didn’t spend all that money just for those years in the apartment, we got to talk and we reuse it where we live now.
Our only regret was not continuing the flooring in the hallway as it is also such a high traffic area and took a lot of abuse. If you are interested in this type of flooring project for your home or rental property and have any other questions, please feel free to ask. If I can’t answer them, I’ll get in touch with the handy man who works behind the scenes here, and I’m sure he can give you some information.
I am Jesus’ lover, wife and mother. And I make the best of what looks like a mess! It’s been a year since we laid bamboo wall panels as flooring over carpet. In my original post I was asked how it was doing, if it was dirty and moldy underneath, so I did a thorough cleaning to find out.
The “jogger” at the front door has nothing to report. Bottom clean, dry, undamaged. (Full disclosure: we have apartment halls that you have to walk through before the door, so snow, rain, and mud are minimal.) Thanks for the natural caramelized finish, it still looks great. The edges of the grass prevent it from moving. It “floats” on the carpet and has never had to be adjusted.

Our 4 and 7 year olds aren’t particularly talented at keeping drinks in glasses or food on plates – so this is a real test.
Again, full disclosure: We do not have a Kool-aid or purple grape juice policy. We are water drinkers with the occasional apple or orange juice. I’m sure it helped with the results.
I can try connecting the two panels together with fishing wire. I’m sure a talented seamstress or tailor could find a way to put the pieces together more smoothly. The bamboo is attached to a canvas-like cloth that is eventually accessed by folding.
As you can see from the previous picture, the black color has not held up well. I don’t mind from a distance. Close all the action from the sliding chairs is obvious. Stick to natural or caramelized bamboo.
How To Transition Flooring
We had a wheelchair rolling on bamboo for 2 months. Where the hallway was relatively safe, we had no problems. Where it was easier to move around in the dining room, it was terrible. The twisting of the wheels caused a small piece to break off. Also quite often we had to remove the table and chairs to adjust the position. Without a wheelchair, tune-ups happen every few months, a good time to clean the bottom and check for hidden stains anyway.
Overall, we are happy with the protection they provided for the floors. They make cleaning easy and I love the way they look. They bend and form themselves to the floor below, so there is no risk of tripping.
I’m wondering if others have tried this and what their experiences have been. I found these mats secondhand and never found out where they came from. I found 4 foot lengths of bamboo on 8 foot panels on Amazon and Home Depot. Please share if you find other sources!

I plan to put some cushion vinyl over my hallway carpet. I will be using properly cut sheets, not just cuts as shown. Later I will pull the mat out from under the vinyl and glue it down.
I know it’s not the most professional way, but I have to do it now because the carpet is making me sick and I don’t have time to lay the boards and stick the vinyl right now. I know there will be bubbling in the meantime.
How To Replace Carpet With Hardwood Floor? A Step By Step Guide To Removal And Installation
You’re right, that’s not the best way to do it. If the vinyl isn’t glued down, it will shrink a bit when you cut it, so don’t try to cut it to fit. I like to keep at least an inch so you can trim to fit, because you already know how hard it is to trim exactly.
Using a rug as a template also won’t work because the edges of the rug are never cut to fit exactly. Their edges are stuck between walls and adhesive tapes. I would wait until you are ready for the final installation and then get some construction paper and make an exact template by laying out the paper in the hallway and taping it together. then place the template over the vinyl sheet and cut out with a straight edge and knife.
If you want to put something on top of carpet, put plastic hall rail on it, vinyl flooring is not suitable to put on top of carpet.

It’s cheap, neutral, easy to install, and as long as people take off their shoes and eat like mature adults, it can work. Clearly, children are not taken into account when making this choice. I gave up the easy-to-clean stained concrete entryway and wood-floored dining room to move to the city. I was terrified of what would happen to the carpet in our apartment and was depressed that I would
have to live with my failures to keep it clean.

I discovered the perfect solution by accident—or divine intervention—while browsing through a nonprofit art scrap store. Basically a store full of organized junk and random leftovers that sell for pennies for creative types for art projects. Deep in the back of a bin full of rolled up odds and ends was this thick, beautiful bamboo. For $10
