A focus group in southern Wisconsin received various messages this week focusing on the billionaire businessman and a possible three-way showdown with Donald Trump and Joe Biden or Elizabeth Warren.
According to a source involved in the testing, the focus groups discussed a variety of topics involving Stack and focused on examples of his “demonstration of leadership” by stopping the sale of assault rifles at all Dick’s Sporting Goods stores in the area. Those in the group watched several short videos of other candidates, including Biden, Warren and former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz — a billionaire who previously announced in September that he would not run. Independents explored the presidential race — but watched eight or nine videos, including Stack messaging, according to focus group participants.
Among the questions posed to about two dozen participants: “Would you like to vote for a third-party candidate?”
“[Focus group members] mentioned that if Biden gets criticized for looking old, then Ed Stark doesn’t look young,” the participant said, adding that some people think Stark ” Without the “charisma” coalition needed to attract voters, you need to have the opportunity to be a third-party candidate. “

Joe Hunter, Gary Johnson’s Liberal presidential campaign adviser, said in 2012 and 2016 that he had heard Stark’s “name come up” when discussing a possible presidential run.
“It’s big; all the structural, institutional barriers are very, very difficult … It’s very difficult to put them together without extraordinary resources.”
But Stack will start with some strengths, including his personal wealth and the national attention he drew last year after announcing that Dick’s Sporting Goods would destroy $5 million worth of assault weapons and change its gun sales policy after the Parkland High School shooting. Stark’s decision won praise, but also met with strong opposition, including from the National Rifle Association.

While Stack is testing as an independent candidate, he has been a major Republican donor. In 2012, he donated $100,000 to Restore Our Future, a super PAC supporting Mitt Romney. He also donated $10,000 to the Pennsylvania Republican Committee and to various Republican members of Congress, including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
He drew the ire of the National Republican Congressional Committee in 2016 when he donated $300,000 to a super PAC supporting House Democrats — a donation he said at the time to benefit his sister, Kim Myers, who was running Congressman Democrat of New York.
“Edward Stark is pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into Nancy Pelosi’s super PAC to fund his sister’s run for Congress,” the NRCC said at the time. “Great to see that Stack is using the money he makes from his family shipping job overseas from Upstate New York to China to try and get Kim Myers a seat in Congress.”
“As we were leaving, I asked the parents in Parkland, and one of the things was, ‘What do you guys want me to do?’ And they said, ‘We want you to keep talking,'” he said in Binghamton, N. Price Rite stores operated at the location for about seven years. It closed in October 2019. Before that, the space was occupied by a Circuit City electronics store.
According to the Dick’s Sporting Goods website, a “grand opening event” for the new Vestal outlet store is scheduled to take place Friday through Sunday. But additional work needs to be done before operations can begin.
The store’s website says it will offer significant savings on regular prices on “thousands of styles”. It advises customers to receive “new styles” every week.
