But when we replaced that floor, we only had enough material to clad the main room and hallway. This left the bathroom, 2 bedrooms and the kitchenette with the original ugly carpet.

After a long search that required a lot of patience, I finally found a store that was selling the same flooring at a deep discount.

And the bathroom in the basement also had a carpet that I really wanted to get rid of. So we put that tile in that room too.

It was a blow to the group, friend! I thought we were in trouble as our vinyl plank floor was going to be installed directly onto a concrete sub floor.

However, if you find that your current flooring has significant low spots, consider repairing those spots with a self-leveling compound.

Our existing linoleum floor was not in great condition, but we found it to be in good condition for this small area.

It’s a good idea to prep the floor to make sure there isn’t a layer of wax or grease stains on the linoleum that can cause the glue to fail to stick.

The first thing you need to do is give the floor a thorough scrub with TSP — or trisodium phosphate.

This is a strong chemical so be sure to wear gloves and eye protection, but it should work!

Also check the manufacturer’s guidelines to see if they recommend any additional steps to prepare your existing subfloor.

After pulling up the rest of our floating floor, we realized that the linoleum didn’t cover the entire concrete slab in this room.

We scraped and sanded down the old extra glue that the old plumbers put on the concrete many moons ago.

TIP: If the backing of your new vinyl floor is highly adhesive like ours, wearing rubber gloves will help control how much adhesive gets on your hands.

We decided not to use a floor roller and found that using painter’s tape worked great for a few tricky tiles.

Our floors have a fairly self-adhesive backing. We found that we had to get some denatured alcohol to remove where the adhesive was transferring from our fingers to the top of the vinyl tile.

However, if you plan to install peel-and-stick tiles in a kitchen, bathroom, or laundry room that uses a lot of water, make sure you get flooring that’s rated for those types of spaces.

TIP: Be sure to add an excess of 15% when you get the square footage of the room you want to install. It’s better to have a little too much rather than coming at the end of a DIY project and not having enough materials!

Although not always easy, in principle there is no reason why wooden floors cannot be installed on top of vinyl floors. However, as with all things, this principle comes with certain limitations.

One of the most important things to consider before installing wood floors over vinyl is the composition of the subfloor beneath the vinyl floor. One of the most important things emphasized by all wood flooring suppliers is that wood floors should be installed on a suitable sub-floor. Suitable subfloors include existing hardwood floors and concrete. Such subfloors create a stable basis for laying your new wooden floor.

After you have determined that your vinyl floor has been installed on a suitable sub-floor for your new wood floor, you need to verify that the vinyl floor is properly and securely attached to that sub-floor. If the vinyl floor is not well attached to the subfloor, this can eventually lead to movement in the new wood floor.

If your vinyl floor is then installed over existing planks, it is important to determine the direction of the old planks. This is important because when new planks are laid over old ones, the new planks are perpendicular (or at 90 degrees) to the old planks for stability.

Whether or not the vinyl is padded is another important consideration. In some cases, a padded vinyl could cause your new floor to squeak. While certain types of squeaks can be minimized by introducing proper underlayment, it’s important to ensure you install your new floor on the correct subfloor and don’t cause problems later. If you have any doubts, then it is worth seeking the advice of a professional.

One last thing to keep in mind, especially if you are looking to install a new wooden floor over vinyl in a renovation project, is that there is a possibility that there is a really attractive original floor underneath the vinyl! For many years, vinyl was laid over sound hardwood floors to achieve a more modern (for the time) look. The end result is that the original hardwood floor (aka reclaimed hardwood floor) could be waiting under the vinyl, just awaiting its renaissance. Although there are some cases where it is not appropriate, almost any type of flooring can be laid on linoleum. Linoleum is a favorite in kitchens, bathrooms, and family rooms in the basement. It is a composite of natural ingredients such as linseed oil, sawdust or cork powder, jute and limestone. Because it is a completely natural, environmentally friendly product, linoleum can be recycled at the end of its useful life, which according to GreenFloors is between 25 and 40 years.

The first patent for the process of making linoleum was granted in 1860 to an Englishman named Frederick Walton, who noticed a gummy skin developing on the paint in a glass. Walton moved to New York in 1872, built a factory, and established a company town called “Linoleumville” on Staten Island. Linoleum floors were among the most popular along with other products
