The entire process of buying a rug from Home Depot takes a few days. First you need to go to the store and register an inspector to come out and measure. They take measurements and a few days later you get a call from Home Depot saying you can come back and arrange payment for what the total price will be. When I went back to the shop about a week later, they said they needed about 440 ft of carpet and pads. The total cost was about $1380. But when we bought the carpet there was a sale in the store, plus we used a gift card that was 11.5% off, plus we used a Lowe’s gift card for 10%.
One moment was a bit nervous at the register when they said we couldn’t use Lowe’s gift cards. But after talking with them and they called their manager, he said as long as it’s not under $100 discount it’s okay for us to use it. The best thing is that when we calculated, they didn’t give us the maximum of $50, they ended up giving us a 10% discount at around $97. So, when everything was done, we got a carpet that should have cost around $1400 for around $1000. We were quite happy. who got a great deal.
It took another week to get to the manufacturer of the carpet in them to give us a call again and set a date to install. After calling and setting up an appointment, we had two days to rip out all the carpet and padding in the room. So we spent a few hours moving all the furniture into the living room and then ripped up the carpet and pad in the dining room. After we had what we thought were all the staples pulled out I took a wet rag and started wiping everything down. That’s what I realized we missed about twelve staples of the board to shuffle through the floor.
The next day I started in the family room. A rather difficult carpet to remove, the roll kept rubbing against the side wall. So I had to play around before I could roll it up and take it down to the basement. Here you can see what carpet and wood floors look like. All those little dark spots are from carpet pads that have been around for years.

You can see how rolling the rug and pad is the easy part, all the hundreds of staples that need to be pulled is a lot of fun work.
So now we have two rooms, the carpet is removed, the pad is removed, the staples are removed, everything is cleaned down and ready for the carpet to be installed the next day.
I also removed the trim between the door to the kitchen and the opening to the front door. I’m not 100% sure if I should take the cut, but I know it will be easier for the carpet installer. That way they don’t have to push the carpet under the trim. I can only put the trim on top of the carpet after they are installed.
It turned out to be the right choice and he said it was easier for him. Also, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to find the piece again and we’ll have to make some small pieces to fit the door opening and I don’t want to break it while we’re installing the carpet.

When the carpet installer came the next day, I was at work but Karrie stayed home. They showed up and said that the plan they gave me for making the carpet was not the best way to install it. But he went back to the shop and cut it so there was only one seam in the room. Here is a picture of what the padding looks like.
The big change is having new carpet in there and it looks great. Plus walking on it feels great on your feet. There is a big difference between a new thick carpet and an old carpet. Later that day we moved all the furniture back into the room and I reinstalled the door trim.
