We rejoiced when they finally opened a brick-and-mortar restaurant in Bugis Cube and now even those living in the Far East have reason to celebrate. From June 9, 2022, the nasi lemak Muslim restaurant has set up shop in the basement of Changi Airport Terminal 3!
After a long layover in Europe, you might crave good ole’ rice after you’ve had bread, pasta, and potatoes all day. Well, don’t despair because the four signature dishes from the Bugis store can now also be enjoyed at the Changi Aiport outlet.
Sink your teeth into the Signature Chicken Cutlet ($12.30) which comes with a large piece of battered chicken along with classic sides of Onsen Egg ($2.20), house sambal, ikan billis, house achar and also your choice of bottled beverage .
If you prefer a heartier protein, go for the Wholesome Lemak Drumstick ($15.20) for a rich and juicy drumstick cooked in their classic lemak curry. The nasi here is also topped with crunchy battered bits to provide a satisfying contrast with every bite.
Retrenched Sia Steward Opens Pablo Escobar Themed Nasi Lemak & Burger Joint
The other two meal options available are Fried Fish Asam Pedas ($13.40) and Grilled Chicken Set ($12.30), which also include a drink as part of the meal. The former will give you two pieces of battered fish, while the latter will give you a moo-ping-inspired grilled chicken cutlet.
Prices here are a bit more expensive than Bugis, but that’s understandable given the higher overhead costs. We find it unfortunate that Husk Nasi Lemak Changi Airport is a takeaway only concept, so keep that in mind when you head out to eat there.
From now until the end of June 2022, Husk Nasi Lemak is hosting a dinner event at its original Bugis outlet. Simply visit daily from 4:00pm to 8:30pm and enjoy their Single Wing Set for just $6.80!
While you’re at the airport, visit La Lola Churreria at Jewel for dessert after nasi lemak! If you want to treat yourself to fragrant coconut rice, be sure to check out our recommendations for nasi lemak in Singapore.

Hakka Lui Cha is giving away free rice with thunder tea to anyone over 65 on February 11 February 8, 2019Hawker reviews Singapore’s OG Lemak Review: Private Chef’s Famous Twice-Steamed Nasi Lemak in Newton August 27, 2021
With nearly 100 hawker stalls, it’s no surprise that Newton Food Center is one of the most popular foodie spots for its wide variety of delicious local food. While the fare tends toward the higher end of hawker food, there are some unique finds here. A new addition to the family is OG Lemak by Chef Shen Tan, a private chef who has built a strong social media following since launching his unique nasi lemak at Maxwell Food Center in 2008.
Formerly from a corporate background, Chef Shen Tan first rose to fame with his 11-ingredient double-steamed nasi lemak, which requires a laborious four-hour cooking process. The creative individual then went on to collaborate with renowned restaurants to develop innovative Mod-Sin dishes such as Bak Chor Mee Pasta and Pulut Hitam Cake. Today, he also runs Ownselfmake Chef, a private home-based culinary experience that lets you enjoy locally inspired menus.
The star of the show is the nasi lemak rice, which according to Chef Shen is the exact same recipe served at her original stall – the now defunct Madam Tan’s. There are four items on the menu: OG Lemak, which lets you choose from Crispy Chicken ($7.90) or Crispy Chicken Thigh ($9.90), Chicken Rendang ($9.90), Beef Rendang ($9.90 ) and Vegan ($9.90). Although the stall is not halal certified, no pork or lard is used here. Chef Shen also reveals that they plan to introduce more items as side dishes in the near future.

Double steamed for superior texture and flavor, the uber fluffy rice is a testament to Chef Shen’s attention to detail. Last year I tried her nasi lemak from her farm-to-table delivery concept Thank You-Unfortunately, but this time it tasted even better than before. Maybe having it on the spot, fresh from the kitchen, is the way to go.
The rice is steamed with 11 ingredients, including onion, ginger, lemongrass and pandan leaves, then soaked in a mixture of coconut milk and fenugreek before steaming a second time. What you get from the four-hour process are multiple layers of flavor in every bite; it’s fragrant but not greasy – probably one of the best versions of nasi lemak I’ve had.
Another interesting point is that you get two types of chili: sweet sambal tumis and spicy sambal belacan. Both are equally delicious, but I find that combining them leads to a more complex flavor that I really enjoy. It’s great that you can adjust the spice level to your liking!
Meat lovers should try the Beef Rendang – imagine generous chunks of beef swimming in a rich rendang sauce. The meat is tender but retains a good bite. Paired with rice and crispy ikan bilis, the combination was heavenly. While it was tasty, it wasn’t the best rendang I’ve had. Personally, I would prefer the meat to be just a bit softer and less stringy.

If you only have room for one meal, go for the Crispy Chicken Thigh. Perfectly battered, beautifully crispy skin with a subtle sweetness similar to shrimp paste chicken, this fried chicken was without a doubt the highlight of my meal. Pulling apart a piece of goodness revealed tender and juicy meat that was just off the charts. Fried chicken is hard to find
Vegetarians will be pleased that there is a vegan option. The Vegan Set includes a mix of items such as sambal tumis, sambal goreng, grilled eggplant, tempeh chips and sambal tau kwa. This dish was extremely tasty considering it was completely dairy and meat free. Luckily it wasn’t too spicy either. I think having this option on the menu was a smart move as more and more people are going veg these days.
OG Lemak is located at Newton Food Centre, which is a short four-minute walk from Newton MRT Station. The stall is near the main entrance of the Hawker Center so it’s quite easy to find. You may choose to snag an outdoor table, but
beware of the many crows around. Alternatively, choose protected seats, of which there are plenty.
If you are looking for a good plate of nasi lemak near the city, OG Lemak will not disappoint. My only gripe was the price, which may seem steep for hawker fare. But considering the amount of time and effort involved in preparing the dish and the quality of the ingredients, I think it’s worth it. I will definitely be back for my nasi lemak fix if I’m in the area!
