But, did you know that once you learn some simple tricks for planting plants in containers, you will save a lot of money? Not only that, your containers will be unique and creative, too.

So, if you’re having trouble planning plants, I’ve put together this post—and a video—to show you:

You can watch the video above to get all my tips and a more “visual” look at why I choose each plant. Or, below you can read each tip and laugh at me trying to explain what I’m talking about in the video ?

Stylish Outdoor Planters To Perk Up Your Garden Or Patio

My first tip is to do a loop around the garden center and find a plant that inspires you. Maybe something you’ve never seen before? Maybe it’s your favorite color? Maybe it’s a plant you’re familiar with, but you’ve never seen it in THIS color before? Maybe vegetables, like cabbage, kale and peppers? Or ornamental grass?

Whatever it is, find that plant you MUST have. The one talking to you. This will be the starting/jumping point for organizing your container.

For me, the jumping off point was the moment I saw a beautiful and unusual plant at the garden center. It is a black pepper, almost black, decorated called Black Pearl

Those round, shiny nubs are hot peppers and bloom with purple flowers. And I had to have it.

Ok, the black pearl is in my cart and I’ve decided I need it. At this point, I MUST give myself a good gut check. I call this test a “gut check”.

So, I wonder how this plant fits into my existing space. And, I know it might be a weird question because this is a container setup… right? But, the fact remains that your site is not moving because you decided to change your container. So, there needs to be a connection between your planter and your landscape.

For me… it’s because I use a lot of purple flowers in my space. So, even though the leaves of this pepper plant are WAY darker than anything else in my area, it still has purple flowers that match my purple aster in catmint this time of year.

So, we have our motivational plant. This time, I’m looking at it in my car and grinning like an idiot as I ride on the displays around the nursery… because I love it and it passed my “gut check” test.

So, the next thing on my agenda is to find plants that go with this particular plant. And, in most cases I think about color. So I always look for something purple like pepper… or something orange or yellow against the purple.

Quick Tip: Just learning a little about the color wheel and creating color schemes will up your gardening game.

To me, it was just another pepper plant. And yes, I’m obviously obsessed with peppers this year. But, this plant had a lot of work and I thought it was the perfect partner for my black pepper. It is called Mambo ornamental pepper bush

Fertilizers: All About Numbers & Ratios, Synthetic Vs Organic, And Npk

It has shiny peppers, but the peppers are different shapes and some are the same (purple) but some are different (orange).

Also, the leaves of this pepper tree are similar in shape and have a luster similar to Black Pearl. The leaves are black, but not as black as Black Pearl.

So at this point we have the Black Pearl Ornamental Pepper combined with the Mambo Ornamental Pepper bush. And, the Mambo gives a little difference but not enough to elevate my dish. So my next mission is to find something that will be very different from my inspiration plant.

So, I took the extracts from the orange peppers at Mambo and set out to find another orange flowering plant. But not another pepper. I want something with a different texture than the glow bulbs I already have. That’s when I stumbled upon Celosia ‘Twisted Orange’ Cockscomb

How different and interesting are these flowers? This is exactly what I was loo
king for differently.

The flowers are a tangled, twisted mass of orange that is a stark contrast to the shiny bulbs of the peppers I’ve had.

It also has green leaves that are much lighter than pepper leaves (although the shape is similar).

When I get to this point, I always think about what I’m throwing in my bag. In most cases, the difference is height, but of course it can be other things.

Budget Garden Ideas

You want to make sure you include something long, something sturdy and something low to cover the mess (or “spill” in the bowl). So, in my setup, I have my Mambo Pepper that will grow low and maybe spill over the edge of the planter. My celosia and Black
