C & S Home Improvement – Whether you’re camping, going to the beach for the day, or having a summer gathering at your home, seating is something to consider. Something compact, light (and therefore easy to store), not to mention comfortable, is super important. Now imagine if it were cute enough that you could even use it as an extra seat in your living room. That was our goal for today’s project.
This camping stool can be used anywhere you need it and can be easily stored away, or it can be left in your home for when guests come over – think an ottoman or ottoman. The two keys to making this project are hardwood and heavy outdoor fabric. Hardwoods, such as oak, provide the rigidity that softwoods cannot, and it makes this design delicate. The heavy-duty outer fabric also provides extra strength. You can absolutely opt for a regular outdoor fabric (like we used for the hammock or the outdoor movie seats), but I loved using this awning fabric. It doesn’t fray and therefore doesn’t need hemming around the edges (that’s a serious bonus, for me!), and it has no stretch, which means there’s less room for variance.

A note before we start: When mounting dowels in a pre-drilled hole, I choose my dowels very carefully. For a project like this I want a dowel that fits the hole really well, and because wood is an organic material, measurements can’t always be accurate. Even if you have a ⅞” dowel and a ⅞” drill, they don’t necessarily fit perfectly. I like to drill a hole in a piece of scrap wood with the bit I plan to use, then take the piece of scrap wood to the store and see which dowels fit best.

The first step is to cut the wood to size. Cut oak one by two and dowels with a handsaw and miter box (or a circular saw).
Cut the one-by-two into four lengths with one straight cut end and one end at a 45-degree angle. These four lengths form the legs of the chair. Each piece should measure 24 ½” from the point of the corner to the flat end. Cut each dowel into 17″ length and 18 ¾” length. The dowels act as cross pieces between the legs and also hold up the fabric seat .
Measure and mark along the length of the one-by-two legs for where the dowels will go. Measure from the top of each leg (the straight cut end) ¾” down and center – mark with a pencil. Measure from the bottom point up 3 ½” and mark in the middle. Clamp the pieces to a piece of wood and drill through both pencil marks on all legs.
Then measure and mark for the pivot point on the legs. Measure from the top of each leg to the midway point (30 cm) and mark in the middle. Drill a hole with a 9/32-inch drill bit.

Since we use almost any dowel in its entirety, we are dealing with the barcode sticker. I like to use a razor blade to remove most of it and then sand off any sticky residue (most glue removers contain oil which will stain the wood).
Sand the cut ends and drill holes with 150 grit sandpaper or a fine/medium scouring pad. At this point you can choose to leave the sharp edges on the boards or round them with a sander.
Take two of the legs and lay them down with the bottom points facing each other. Insert the two short dowels into the pre-drilled holes in one leg and the two longer ones into the other leg.
Pre-drill the dowel through the side of the leg with a countersink. Remove the dowel and apply a thin layer of glue around the inside of the hole before replacing and securing with a 1 ¼” outside screw. Wipe off excess glue.

Cut fabric to 15 ½” x 25″. You can use a rotary cutter and a cutting mat or fabric scissors. Use a straight edge or a framing square and a fabric pen to make straight lines and right angles. Fold the ends 2 ¾” over and pin in place. Hem ⅛” away from the raw edge, then again ¼” from that point.
Because this fabric is so thick, you’ll need a heavy-duty needle in your sewing machine and heavy-duty thread.
Slide the fabric onto the two top dowels attached to the legs of your stool. Add the two remaining legs to the other side of the dowels, making sure the bottom corners point in the same direction as the legs on the other side of the dowels. Pre-drill the dowels and attach them to the legs with screws, but wait with glue for now.
Slide both sets of legs between each other, creating an “X”. Add two washers between the two legs on the pre-drilled hinge point and slide a bolt through them. Secure with a nut. Repeat on the other side.

Now that your stool is assembled, test and make sure the fabric is the correct length (i.e. your stool unfolds at the correct angle). Because I built a prototype with a stretchy fabric, the seat of my stool ended up being a bit narrower than I expected. This wasn’t big enough for me to go back and re-adjust it, but I modified the tutorial so your stool should come out just right!
Separate the side of the stool that has not yet been glued and remove the fabric seat. Make the necessary adjustments. Since I already pre-drilled the holes to attach the legs to the dowels, I numbered each dowel and hole to make sure I put everything back together correctly.
Finish the wood with an exterior finish, suitable for hardwood. This process turned out to be a bit tricky, as oak is rarely used outdoors. I suggest you do what I did and keep an eye on your finish and wipe off any areas where the product collects (even if, like mine, your finish doesn’t need to be wiped off). Any unabsorbed product that makes your chair sticky can be removed with turpentine.
Once your finish has dried, slide the seat cover back on and reattach the legs you removed, this time gluing as you go. That is it! Once it’s dry, you’re ready to tote this stool to your next camping trip or picnic – then fold it back up neatly when you get back home.
