Vegetarian Chinese Food Recipes To Make At Home
Kolkata may boast Chinatown, but Chennai’s pride was once its family-owned restaurants run by the Chinese community that calls India home. Located almost next door to IIT Madras, the Waldorf is one of the last surviving Chinese-owned restaurants. A campus favorite among IIT Madras students (Waldies to them) and Anna University hostel dwellers, this restaurant still evokes the same old-world charm it did in the 1970s. This is also where dishes such as American Chopsuey and Chilli Meat still take center stage.
One of the finest new Asian restaurants to debut in Chennai in recent years, Soy Soi focuses on street food from across Asia’s capitals. The restaurant’s Chinese selection is dominated by its exhaustive selection of dim sums. Mushroom and edamame bowl and Cheung Fung prawn – steamed rice noodles with crispy fried prawn topped with black vinegar and soy sauce are among our favourites. Baos – such as Char Siew Belgian pork bao and chilli Hoisin jackfruit bao, usually hit the spot too.
One of the city’s largest restaurants also offers an exhaustive menu that is now delivered to the dining table (or couch) thanks to ITC’s customized delivery app – Gourmet Couch. Pan Asian draws from popular dishes and exotic options from cuisines as diverse as China, Thailand and Japan. The Chinese selection includes delicious small plates such as Wok Chestnut with Black Pepper Crumble and Chicken with Vodka Braised Chili. The Chinese menu includes dim sums – bok choy and zucchini are a favorite, and popular entrees such as the wok sliced pork.
Golden Dragon has been Chennai’s premier Chinese restaurant since its debut in the 1970s. While it may take some time for the restaurant to reopen for indoor dining, Taj Hotels’ Qmin app now allows you to order some of the restaurant’s time-tested signatures such as the Kung Pao Chicken, the Lotus Stem with Honey Chili, the Fish in Black Bean Chili Sauce and the Date Pancakes.

This fine family-style restaurant has been associated with large portions and consistent flavors almost since it first appeared in the eighties. The menu hasn’t changed much – regulars still swear by popular dishes like their Manchow Soup, the Five-Colored Rice, Chicken Lollipop and the Hunan Fire Chicken. The restaurant has now added a couple of links to its chain, but it is the first outlet in Nungambakkam that still draws the most eat-in and home delivery orders.
This modern restaurant is not bound by rigid food types, but offers a wide variety of Indian and Asian dishes with an emphasis on small plates that are shared. The home delivery option includes some of the restaurant’s Chinese best sellers, including baos and dumplings. The pan-fried bao with spicy garlic sauce and black bean sauce is a flavorful option, and then there are the Chinese cabbage rolls with hot Sichuan broth and peanut celery
Chennai’s HuTong is tucked away, almost like a Hutong (the Chinese term for alley) in Beijing. It is unpretentious, elegant and the interior has some beautiful details. Aside from dim sums and baos, check out their stir-fried starters – the lotus stem with a sprinkle of Sichuan pepper is amazing and one-dishes (combining rice and sauce on the side) like roasted garlic rice and the chicken (or vegetables) with black bean sauce.
Pan-Asian restaurants are Chennai’s new obsession, the clever Nasi and Mee packing the same energy as a Southeast Asian hawker centre. The decor adds to this energy. Showstopper lighting mixes with bold wall art, and you can watch the chefs in action from their show kitchen. But it’s the transparent dim sums that are probably the biggest draw – the soupy Xia Long Bao dumpling and prawn hargao win our vote. Their XO sauce flavored noodle soups are also worth checking out.

The cocktail, a CNY-centric concoction, is a mixture of champagne, gin and mandarin oranges. Called “cocktail with teeth”, the party drink will also be available from 18 January to 15 February 2022.
Start your night off with a selection of appetizers, ranging from mouth-watering options such as Shredded Filo Seafood Roll, Sticky Chicken Rice Balls and Caramelised Pork Belly Bite.
Moving on to the mains, you can choose from a host of ‘under the sea’ specials such as Red Curry Slipper Lobsters, Grilled Yellowtail Cheek, Scented Lemongrass and Lime Clams and Caramelised Orange Barramundi.
Or if you’re looking for a meaty entree, the menu will also feature traditional choices like the ever-so-tender Steamed Shaoxing Corn-Fed Chicken, White Pepper Espresso Ribs and Chargrilled Beef Short Rib. The selection of dishes will also be accompanied by a selection of either wok-fried clay pot ice cream or smoked duck wok-fried noodles.
