A Dollar Tree manager in Bremen, Indiana, was reportedly fired after posting a handwritten sign saying the store would only hire baby boomers. The Pew Research Center defines a “baby boomer” as any person born between 1946 and 1964.

The sign read as follows: “I’m sorry we are closing AGAIN. My two new cashiers quit because I said their girlfriends couldn’t stand here the whole shift. Don’t hire Gen Z’s. They don’t know what work really means. HIRING NOW! *Baby Boomers ONLY, please!

A video of a news report about the sign was later posted on TikTok by user Devon (@servingyoudaily), where it received over 117,000 views and sparked intense debate.

After many users alleged that this seemed like age discrimination, TikTokers expressed their theories as to why an employer would only hire baby boomers.
“They just want people who are desperate and too tired to fight for anything other than poverty wages,” one user speculated.

“Back in the day, companies could take advantage of you and people would call it hard work,” said another.
Others said the high turnover wasn’t the fault of the Gen Z employees the store hired.
“All positions at Dollar Tree are high turn over positions,” claimed one user. “No one stays there long term.”
In 2019, the Virginian-Pilot reported that Dollar Tree had such a problem with executive turnover that the company’s annual proxy report tasked CEO Gary Philbin with solving the problem the year before.

Al-Jazeera also noted that dollar stores like Dollar Tree have notoriously high turnover rates, and the article speculates that a series of wage and hour lawsuits against Dollar Tree were a sign of employee dissatisfaction (as of 2014, Dollar Tree had 15 cases either pending or settled “they recent years”, according to the article).
“I feel like it’s not laziness,” one user wrote. “I think any dollar store seems to pay little … low staff and long hours – I wouldn’t want to work there.”

ANN ARBOR, MI — An Ann Arbor Dollar Tree has closed abruptly, according to a sign on the door Thursday, Jan. 20.
“The shop is closed until further notice. I have quit. I apologize,” reads a notice on the door, signed “the one and only manager”.
Here’s What A Vacant Pier 1 Store Is Set To Become In Bethlehem Township (update)
The store is located at 325 N. Maple Road. Another sign alerts customers that the location’s hours change frequently due to “factors such as Truck Day and staffing shortages.”
Dollar Tree has two locations in Ann Arbor and three in the Ypsilanti area. The company, known for pricing almost everything at $1 or less, announced in November that it would roll out a permanent price increase for the first time in 35 years. Dollar Tree cited the rising cost of merchandise and store operations as the reason for the increase.
It is unclear how long the store will remain closed. Dollar Tree did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Maple Road store is usually open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and Wednesday through Saturday, with closure on Sunday and Tuesday, according to a notice on the door.

The Dollar Tree at Baywick Plaza on Rt. 9. It has been there for years and every time I was there it seemed busy, why would they close this place?
I originally wrote about Family Dollar replacing Dollar Tree, but I guess I was wrong. Both stores will be there in one place. It seems a little strange, but it can work. We already had a Family Dollar for several years in Bayville then that closed about 2 years ago.
To look at the store, it looks a bit strange. A door and Family Dollar on the left and Dollar Tree on the right. It looks like while they were building and putting these stores together, it looks like they knocked down a possible wall for the old Rite Aid. Do you remember being there in the square next to the Dollar Tree?
