Laying Luxury Vinyl Plank Over Tile – If you are considering luxury vinyl tiles or planks for your bathroom floor, there are a few things you should know before you buy. In this guide, I cover everything you need to know about choosing and installing LVT for bathroom fixtures….

Four years ago, during the remodeling of my old 1980’s bathroom, I installed press-and-lock luxury vinyl tile directly over the ugly, ceramic tile.

Although at the time, installing such a new technology in a haphazard manner (not even tearing down the existing subfloor) had a very serious impact, looking back years later, I can proudly say that it was a risk that paid off.

Installing Luxury Vinyl Over Existing Tiles.

Not only is the new LVT floor a dramatic change from the old space, the technology has proven to match its claims of waterproofing and durability in high traffic areas.

Even better, thanks to the click-to-lock installation that makes this product available to beginner/intermediate DIY-ers, my husband and I saved a significant portion of our remodeling budget by ‘not to hire an expert on the floor of the office. Not only that, we save time and trouble by not having to show this ugly $$, pre-existing stone tiles.

By sharing all the knowledge I gained during my initial research, purchase and installation, my hope is that this guide will help you decide for yourself if LVT is the best option for your unique needs. .

One of the main reasons I choose luxury vinyl over traditional stone or ceramic tile (not on a budget as mentioned above) is the fact that most (but not all) click-and-lock options. is completely grout-free.

Installing Wood Flooring Over Vinyl Flooring

As far as I’m concerned, grout (at least light colored grout) is just a look waiting to be done.

Not only do I think grout lines around 12×24 and 12×12 tiles can be too busy for a minimalistic-leaning aesthetic, being a mom and a pet owner, grout has proven to be a pain in the $$ for. me and all my past experiences (like I need one more freakin’ thing to clear off my to-do list).

Once I decided that I didn’t want to mess with something, I was led to a variety of free options including sheet vinyl, hardwood, and laminate flooring. But because hardwood and laminate are not completely waterproof, vinyl seems like the best choice for my bathroom, which will be exposed to a lot of water spills, showers, toilets and sinks.

Although many vinyl sheets are sold as waterproof, since I wanted to have a high-end feeling in my first house, I decided that a luxury vinyl roof was the best choice.

But…while all vinyl is waterproof, for bathroom fixtures, you want to make sure that if you go with any type of LVT or LVP that has an underlayment, that the cover itself is good for hot water.

Since I want to install luxury vinyl tile directly over the existing tile floor, I want to choose a type of luxury vinyl that has enough coverage to prevent the old lines from showing through the new floor.

Tip: To avoid the telegraphing effect, I recommend using a tile thickness of at least 7.5 to 8 millimeters.

To be completely rational, I decided to go with this tile from Mannington that was designed with Microban technology.

Bottom line: Before buying LVT for your bathroom, I recommend choosing one that has “antimicrobial” listed in the product description. After all, in wet and steamy conditions, you don’t want the bathroom floor acting as a breeding ground for mold or mildew!

Although I have a detailed, step-by-step tutorial in this separate post, How to Install Luxury Vinyl Tile, I want to give you some helpful tips to consider specifically for installation in the bathroom.

For making the cuts in the LVT for the air vent and toilet flange, my husband found a good sized jigsaw to work best for the flexible base products we used.

Since you will be removing the toilet before installing your new floor, you will need to be familiar with plumbing. Fear not, this helpful tutorial on how to flush a toilet should be just what you need.

To take proper precautions for toilet flushing, my husband used some painters tape we had lying around.

As shown below, fix the tile or plank around the toilet flange and mark the width with tape. Next, adjust the tile to determine the depth of the toilet flange.

The tape will form a grid pattern and the square formed will be the place to cut the hole for the flange.

Good to know: Once you install your toilet on the new roof, it will now be available through the drain hole. As a result, a wax seal (even a hard one) may not be able to make a strong seal. For that situation, I will use this toilet flange extender.

Where LVT meets the shower and/or tub, you want to maximize your savings! As it is cut properly, it will need to be not too small to ensure that water from the shower drain does not find its way under the LVT.

If the exposed joint ends meet the foundation, use a utility knife to remove the exposed part. This will ensure that there is no excess caulking.

Although there are many positive aspects of LVT and LVP (waterproof, budget-friendly, low-maintenance, durable, easy to maintain and easy to install, just to name a few) ole), this option may not be for everyone.

Things To Consider Before Installing Floating Floors Over Old Tile Flooring

If you are a connoisseur who loves the feel and touch of real stone or ceramic tiles, LVT will not fool you. Of course… it seems real, but not under firm feet.

Although the material attached below feels good to be straight and warm to the touch, there is no doubt that it feels (and sounds) different when it is walking compared to other hard materials such as tile or stone.

However, I want to add that although the flooring is not as good as other traditional options, LVT is becoming more and more popular as a design option.

When it’s time to sell our beloved decor, remodeled bathrooms are a growing trend and our resale value is very impressive (although our kitchen, bathroom and living room shower with LVT and LVP floors).

Things You Need To Know Before Buying Vinyl Flooring

That being said, I don’t think the “feeling” of this floor is keeping us and the buyers back, but if you’re a fan of soft things, you might want to go home. demo and try this for yourself.

Now that I’ve discussed the basics of luxury vinyl flooring and bathrooms, I thought I’d outline some LVT and LVP options for you below.

If you want to recreate the look of my bathroom, the flooring I used is called the “j” theme below…

Given my extensive experience using luxury vinyl tile (I installed it in almost every room in my previous home renovations), it’s safe to say that this new advancement in technology is A real game changer- especially for weekend warriors like my husband and I.

How Much Does It Cost To Install Vinyl Plank Flooring? (2023)

When things suddenly changed with a big change in the spring of the epidemic and canceled our spring vacation, we decided to hunt and do some housework. We haven’t decided whether to replace all the tiles in our basement because it seems like a big job since the ceramic tile is laid directly under the concrete sub-floor. But we also know that we really want to change and improve the look of the basement and create more flexible housing options everywhere. The old tile was uneven, hard to clean, hard on the feet, and cold in the winter. And it’s not our style or our color.

In January I painted all the walls white and we added a feature wall of wallpaper. I also bought a blanket to cover it with
