Home Depot Carpet Installation Deal – Karrie and I wanted new carpet in our family room and dining room. There were some stains and the carpet was generally worn. The first thing we had to do was find out the size of the rooms. So I measured everything and determined the area. This would give us an idea of how much it would cost to buy the carpet, pad and have it installed.
One thing to remember is that the square footage of the room is not necessarily the square footage you will pay. They usually say you should estimate 20% more than your room size. This is based on how many cuts they will need to make from the full 12 foot roll of carpet. I wanted to try to estimate how much extra we needed to buy, so I would have to find the carpet seam. A few months ago I bought a new DeWalt miter saw from Lowe’s. I was able to get the saw on clearance as well as an extra 10% off when I used an online coupon.
But when you need to buy something at Home Depot, there are a few other tricks you can do. One is that you can go to the US Post Office and get a “change of address packet” with all kinds of coupons inside. One such coupon is 10% off your entire Lowe’s purchase. The best thing about this coupon is that Home Depot will honor 10% up to $50. The next trick is something we discovered when we remodeled our family room.
There are places online where you can buy Home Depot gift cards for less than the value of the card. The way sites work is that they are like an intermediary. People who have gift cards from Home Depot, Lowe’s or various other stores will sell them on the site for less than they are worth. These people would rather have cash than the gift card. The site will then sell those gift cards for a percentage less than what they are worth.
On the site, different stores have different discount percentages. A Home Depot gift card is typically 5% less than face value. The entire process of buying rugs from Home Depot took several days. First you have to go to the store and sign up for an inspector to come out and measure. They take these steps and a few days later you get a call from Home Depot saying you can come back and arrange payment for what will be the full price. When we went back to the store about a week later, they told us we would need about 440 sq ft of carpet and pad. The total cost was going to be about $1380. But at the time we bought the rug there was a sale going on in the store, plus we were using 11.5% off gift cards in addition to our 10% off Lowe’s gift card.
A bit of a nervous moment was at the register when they said we couldn’t use the Lowe’s gift card. But after talking to them and having them call their manager, he said as long as it wasn’t less than $100 off it was fine for us to use it. The good thing was that when they calculated it, they didn’t give us the maximum discount of $50, but instead ended up giving us the full 10% discount of about $97. So when all was said and done, we got a rug that should have cost us about $1400 for about $1000. We were very happy to get such a great offer.
It took another week for the order to get through to the carpet manufacturer to call us back and set up our installation date. After we got the call and made the appointment, we had two days to rip out all the carpet and padding in those rooms. So we spent a few hours moving all the furniture into the living room and then ripped out the carpet and pad in the dining room. As you can see from the underside of the carpet, there were a lot of stains, although I guess they didn’t really show up on the surface.
Once we rolled up the carpet, I took it into the basement and we started removing the pad. This actually took a lot longer than we thought because we had to remove all the staples holding the pad down. We used pliers and screwdrivers to remove them all.

After removing what we thought were all the staples, I grabbed a damp cloth and started cleaning everything up. What I noticed, we missed a dozen random staples on the floor.
The next day I started in the family room. That carpet was a little harder to tear up, the roll kept rubbing against the side walls. So I had to turn it around before it could roll up and go down into the basement. Here you can see what the carpet and wood floor looked like. All those little dark patches are from the carpet stuffing that had been sitting there for several years.

You can see how rolling the carpet and pad is the easy part, all the hundreds of staples that need to be removed is the tedious work. After words, I cleaned everything up and found several more staples that I missed.
So now we had both rooms, carpet removed, pad removed, staples, all cleared and ready for the carpet to be installed the next day.
I also removed the trim between the kitchen door and the front door opening. I wasn’t 100% sure if I should remove the trim, but I knew this would make it easier on the carpet installers. That way they shouldn’t push the carpet under the cut. You could put the trim on top of the carpet after you install it.
This turned out to be the right choice and they said it made it a lot easier. Also, I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to find this trim again and we had to make several small cuts to get it to fit the door opening and I didn’t want to break it while they were installing the carpet.

When the carpet installers arrived the next day, I was at work, but Karrie stayed home. They came forward and said that the plan they were given to make the carpet was not the best way to install it. It’s a big change to have new carpet in there and it looks great. Plus walking in it feels great on your feet. There is a big difference between new thick carpet and old knotted carpet. Later that day we moved all the furniture back into the room and I reinstalled the door stopper.
