This is very important when making most of the design decisions in your home. Look at the bones. Consider the era of your home, or the era you want to recreate. We are all for style blending but when it comes to flooring we would say stick with something that compliments the style, era, and architecture of your home.
If you have a more traditional space, consider marble tiles that will feel fresh and modern but fit in with the style of the period. In a rustic farmhouse (or want to be a rustic modern farmhouse…) stone will fit seamlessly. You can experiment more in a modern home where you are less dedicated to original features, but still consider the overall style of your space and how other rooms are decorated. The entry way sets the tone for the rest of your home.

If you are looking for a classic, hardwearing, suitable for every style, choice of flooring, the wood. It’s not the cheapest type of flooring, but it will last and can hold steady feet in the hallway no problem. Plus, there are an endless number of styles, patterns, and shades available, from traditional parquet that fits more period properties to wide planks that give a rustic, beachy vibe.
We love the warmth that redwood gives to this entryway designed by Interior Fox. The space feels fresh and modern but the floor adds a welcome contrast with all the clean lines and white and black. This is one of the best wood floor colors in our opinion because it’s warm, but neutral enough to be taken throughout the house, creating a smooth flow between all the floors below the house.
‘Wood floors work well in high traffic areas and can be used not only in hallways, but throughout the home.’ explained Jen and Mar, founders of Interior Fox. And great tiles for hallways, whether original to the home’s era or a new addition, they can really elevate a space and are easy to clean. However, if you live in an apartment where noise control is a priority, jute or seaweed are both durable and stylish.
Concrete floors are a huge interior design trend right now. And while it’s colored concrete that seems to be the way to go, we’re a little obsessed with the modern, slightly mid-century brown concrete floor of designer Lisa Sherry’s entryway. Practical and incredibly stylish. And the way the brutalist look is brought down with all the textures and soft layers here, it’s so dreamy.

Plus, there are tons of ways to do it depending on your style from super minimalist with a smooth glossy finish to rustic and industrial.
Stairs are often the main feature of an entryway, so don’t forget them when planning your entryway floor. Now, of course, the entrance floor should be practical above all else, as it is potentially one of the hardest working surfaces in your home. It may not be the place to experiment, however, you can be a little less discreet with the choice of stair flooring.

‘Stone flooring is a great choice for walkways, it provides a hard surface and a timeless aesthetic,’ explains Louisa Morgan of Mandarin Stone. ‘All natural stone is porous to varying degrees so it requires sealing during installation to prevent staining, then maintenance is minimal and requires sweeping and mopping.’
Stone that has an antique finish, such as ‘tumbled’ or ‘Provence’ makes the floor look ready to use and if it has been walked on for centuries. Shade options for stone floors vary from light to dark and everyone in between so the options are endless and can suit all styles and budgets. There are many options for formats too, with large stone sizes or random patterns creating an authentic feel.’
Once only found in elegant period houses (or gracing the floor of 1950s American diners) checkerboard flooring makes a comeback and effortlessly adapts itself to any style. This simple but impactful classic design is a great entryway floor choice as it will add on-trend yet timeless drama. And it’s not all about black and white, you can go bolder with contrasting colors or go for a softer look with reddish brown or warm grey.
‘The floor makes such a difference to how the space feels, and with so much space taken up by the floor, it’s important to get the materials right,’ explains Tom Cox of HÁM interiors (opens in a new tab). ‘In the entrance hall of the Views project we chose for stone, it is hard-wearing, easy to clean, plus you can make an impact with color and pattern. The checkerboard design is impactful but timeless, choosing gray and off-white instead of black gives it a time-worn look.’

Because practical can be beautiful as well. Opting for a darker floor in the entryway is always a good idea, it will hide everyday scuffs and stains plus it can add depth and drama. Marble may sound luxurious, and certainly it creates an elegant look, but it is also a practical choice. ‘I like things that are durable and beautiful. Due to the increased use of the entryway, you want floors that can stand up to the elements of weather and foot traffic. I think that stone and tile can be an excellent choice!’ explained Marie.
The black marble tiles I used in this house fit the modern aesthetic while standing up to the elements of the area. Since this entry is a designated drop zone, it’s important to choose the perfect tile to hide dirt and stand up to melting snow.’
