The first thing you need to do, whether you have chosen floorboards or tiles, is to calculate the area of your room.
Keep in mind as you do this that you need to consider ALL the floor space – so remember to open the cupboard doors before you start, and include any other nooks and crannies.

To find the square footage, simply multiply the width of the room by the length, making sure both the width and length measurements are in feet. The number you get is the floor area in square feet.
You can use our square footage calculator, or the calculator at the top of this article, for peace of mind on level one!
If your room is irregularly shaped, or you want to buy the same floor to use in several different rooms, you can sketch a floor plan and divide it into regular boxes or shapes. Then, simply calculate the square footage of each component and add them together to get the total.
In stage one, you have created the square footage of your space. In stage two, you need to determine how many tiles are needed to fill the space. Obviously, this depends on the size of the tile you choose.
How Much Will My Home Renovation Cost?
Just use our handy chart below to find the number you need to divide. Then, simply divide the square footage of the room by the number from the chart.
Ex. A 140 square foot room will be fitted with 9″ terracotta floor tiles, so you divide 140 by the number from the chart, which for 9″ tiles is 0.5625.
The last stage is just to buy a few more boxes than you think you need; you will definitely use more than the number you calculated in the second stage. Tiles are likely to break during the installation process, and it’s often a good idea to keep a spare pack for years to come in case one breaks. Stone tiles can vary due to their natural coloring, and manufacturers can change or discontinue lines, so buy extra at first, rather than hoping for a close enough match later.
To find out how much extra to get, multiply the number of tiles by 1.05 for a 5% increase or by 1.1 for a 10% increase.

Ex. 248.9 x 1.1 = 274 tiles (always round the decimal point to give a larger margin)
When buying your floorboards, buy 5-10% more than the amount calculated in step one. The way the boards are cut to fit means there is a lot of waste, and you may even throw away some floorboards if they have uneven color patches.
Neglecting to buy extra will inevitably leave you in a deficit, so be sure to be safe with a margin of 5-10% (based on the shape of your room and the type of board. Laminate flooring in a square room will likely lose less scrap and waste than natural hardwood in in an irregularly shaped room).
Simply multiply the square footage of the room (calculated in step one) by 1.05 to get a 5% increase, or by 1.1 to get a 10% increase. If you want help with this, try our percentage calculator.

Rules of thumb for calculating; The average cost to build a residential plot is Rs. 1, 500/sq ft – Rs. 3, 000/sqft depending on the quality of the materials available. These costs include labor and materials, from excavation to the installation of doors and windows as well as the cost of electrical wiring and plumbing. Of course, there are beautiful and time-tested hardwood floors or tiles. But don’t underestimate laminate and vinyl flooring.
When you decide to start a flooring project, the first step is to measure the space and calculate the amount of material you need, and we’ve got you covered.
The first step to calculating the flooring material is to know how much area you want to cover. Most manufacturers and contractors price flooring projects and materials by the square foot, so we recommend measuring the length and width of the room in feet.
Flooring Calculator And Cost Estimator
If you have measurements in some other unit,
use our other calculators to convert: inches to feet, yards to feet or meters to feet.
Sometimes, flooring is available by the square yard, be sure to convert square feet to square yards, if necessary.
For vinyl, laminate or hardwood, plug your length and width into the calculator above (or a multiple of length x width). We recommend adding 10% extra material to allow for wastage, lay out the matching stitches and patterns and give you the quantity you need to buy.
You can also calculate square footage or square meters manually. For a regular rectangular room, keep your measurements in feet, then multiply the length by the width to find the total square footage.
How To Find The Square Footage Of A Room: Flooring & Walls
For other room types, use this formula to find the floor area. Enter your measurements in feet into the formula, then solve to find the amount of flooring needed.
A flooring calculator can estimate material costs by entering the price per square foot of the material. If you’re calculating the cost manually, start by multiplying the square footage of the room
