In the basement, we tore out the worn old carpeting and replaced it with luxury vinyl flooring. We chose flooring made for high humidity environments that is installed directly over the concrete floor.

But when we moved that floor, we had enough material to cover the main room and hallway. This left the bathroom, 2 bedrooms and kitchen with really dirty carpet.
After a long search that took a lot of patience, I finally found a store that was selling the same flooring at a deep discount.
And the basement bathroom also had carpeting that I couldn’t wait to get rid of. So we have installed this tile in that room as well.
It was a shock to the group man! I thought we were in trouble because our vinyl plank flooring had to be installed directly over the concrete subfloor.
Can You Install Carpet Over Tile Floor?
The main thing to consider when installing floor coverings over existing flooring is to make sure the floor is properly prepared and that you have all the right materials.
Most existing standard sheet vinyl is installed on a level subfloor. So you don’t have to take any extra steps to build your floor level.
But if you find that your existing flooring has significant low spots, you may want to use a self-leveling compound to repair those spots.
Our existing linoleum floor was not in great condition, but we found it to be in good condition for this small area.

It’s a good idea to prepare the floor to make sure there are no wax or grease stains on the linoleum that would prevent the adhesive from sticking.
So the first step is to thoroughly scrub the floor with TSP – or Trisodium Phosphate.
This is a strong chemical, so be sure to wear gloves and eye protection, but it should do the trick!
Also check the manufacturer’s guidelines to see if they recommend any additional steps for preparing your existing subfloor.
Installing Luxury Vinyl Over Existing Tiles.
If your old flooring is in good condition, you should be able to install new vinyl tile flooring directly over it.
Depending on the age of the linoleum, it may contain asbestos and you definitely don’t want to break it up if you don’t have to!
We installed 3 different types of floors, and each time, the manufacturer gives detailed steps on where to place that first plank in the room, but it varies with the type of floor and each manufacturer.
If this is the beginning of any peel and stick vinyl flooring in your home, you’ll want to go down the center of the room and make lines for you to follow. You then install the first row from the center point, working your way up the walls.
Can You Nail Or Screw Into Laminate Floor?
The reason you want to do this is to make sure you have a straight line when you lay the first tile.
Since we are continuing this floor from our basement family room, we can continue our vinyl plank floor from the last row we installed.
After we pulled up the rest of our floating floor, we noticed that the linoleum didn’t cover all of the concrete slab in this room.
We scraped and sanded off the excess adhesive old installers applied to the concrete many moons ago.
Can Vinyl Plank Flooring Be Removed And Reinstalled?
Tip: If the backing of your new vinyl flooring is a strong adhesive like ours, wearing rubber gloves helps control how much adhesive gets on your hands.
We chose not to use a floor roller, and found that using painter’s tape worked well for some of the more complex tiles.
Our floors have a substantial adhesive backing. We found that we had to get some denatured alcohol to get the adhesive off the top of the vinyl tiles from our fingers.
But if you plan to install peel and stick tiles in a kitchen, bathroom, or laundry room where a lot of water is used, be sure to get flooring rated for these types of rooms.

We’ve had some issues with tiles shifting or showing a gap in telegraphing. And we’re looking for ways to prevent that from happening. If it deteriorates we may need to use additional adhesive on some boards, although the manufacturer does not recommend this.
Tip: Make sure you add 15% overage when you get the square feet of the room you plan to install. It’s better to have a little too much and not enough materials than to come to the end of a DIY project!

New flooring needs to be installed on a hard, level surface. As long as the existing linoleum is prepared by smoothing rough patches, removing old nails or screws, and cleaning the surface thoroughly, there is little reason not to install new flooring over it.
Although there are some occasions where it is not appropriate, almost any type of floor can be laid over linoleum. A favorite in kitchens, bathrooms and basement family rooms, linoleum is a blend of natural materials including linseed oil, sawdust or powdered cork, jute and limestone. Because it’s an all-natural, eco-friendly product, linoleum can be recycled at the end of its useful life, which is between 25 and 40 years, according to GreenFlores.
The first patent for the process of making linoleum was granted in 1860 to an Englishman named Frederick Walton who noticed that a rubbery skin had developed on top of the paint in a jar. Walton moved to New York in 1872, built a factory and founded a company town called “Linoleumville” on Staten Island. Linoleum floors were the most popular in the 1960s until other products made them less desirable. According to Britannica, vinyl was not introduced until the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair.
How To Install Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring
Preparing a linoleum floor is an important step before laying peel-and-stick tiles, luxury vinyl tiles, ceramic, stone or sheet vinyl. Check the floor for dents, ripples, peeling corners or old nails or staples. Use a belt sander to even out small bumps, glue down peeling corners, remove loose tiles and clean the floor thoroughly. For larger imperfections, such as holes or spots left after you remove loose tile, use a straight-edged trowel to apply a coat of embossing leveler. Allow the floor to dry before laying the new floor.
Until 1986, asbestos was added to many linoleum sheet or tiled floors. You do not need to call an asbestos abatement company to remove it because it is safe as long as the particles are not disturbed. Covering it is perfectly acceptable, but don’t cut it or use a sander to smooth rough patches. If you find that the condition of the floor precludes covering it with new flooring, put on gloves and a face mask, take a small sample and send it to a lab for testing before spending money on asbestos abatement. . If the test comes back negative for asbestos, you can remove the flooring yourself and save a lot of money.
Make sure no mold is present on the linoleum. If it is not removed, it will continue to grow and spread under the new flooring. Use a commercial mold removal product or a weak bleach solution to kill the mold.
If you are working on an old or poorly constructed home, the subfloor under the linoleum may not hold up well under the additional weight of the underlayment for ceramic tile or other flooring that requires an underlayment. Soft spots in the floor or floors that give too much may indicate problems with the subfloor. In this case, it’s usually best to lay a new subfloor with C-grade 3/4-inch plywood on top of the existing floor.

Consider door swings, baseboards and transitions when you are deciding what type of flooring to lay over linoleum. If you choose a thick tile, for example, doors may not open or close properly, and the transition height between rooms may differ enough to create a trip hazard.
