Tribeca (/t r aɪ ˈ b ɛ k ə / ), originally spelled TriBeCa, is a neighborhood in Lower Manhattan in New York City. Its name is an abbreviation of “Triangle under Canal Street”. The “triangle” (or rather quadrangle) is bounded by Canal Street, West Street, Broadway and Chambers Street. By the 2010s, a common marketing tactic was to extend the southern border of Tribeca to Vesey or Murray Streets to increase the appeal of real estate listings.

The area was farmland, in the early 19th century it was a residential area before becoming a commercial area producing produce, haberdashery and textiles, and moving to artists and actors, models, craftsmen and other celebrities. The neighborhood is home to the Tribeca Festival, which was created in response to the 9/11 attacks to revitalize the neighborhood and downtown after the devastation caused by the terrorist attacks.

Tribeca is one of a number of neighborhoods in New York City whose names are compound abbreviations or acronyms, including SoHo (south of Houston Street), NoHo (north of Houston Street), Nolita (on north of Little Italy), NoMad (north of Madison Square), DUMBO (Down under the Manhattan Bridge), and BoCoCa, the latter of which is actually a collection of neighborhoods (Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, and Carroll Gardens).
The name was coined in the early 1970s and originally applied to the area bounded by Broadway and Canal Streets, Lispard and Church Streets. which looks like a triangle on town planning maps. Residents of the area formed the TriBeCa Artists’ Co-op to file legal documents related to a 1973 zoning dispute. According to a local historian, a newspaper reporter mistakenly interpreted this name as referring to a much larger area, which is where the name of the local area came from.
The area now known as Tribeca or TriBeCa was farmed by Dutch settlers in New Amsterdam, most notably Roeleph Jans (who received a tract of land called Domini Brauerei from Wouter van Twiler in 1636) and his wife Anneke Jans, who later married for Everardus Bogardus . The land remained in the family until 1670, when the deed was signed by Colonel Francis Lovelace. In 1674, the Dutch took over the area, until a year later the Glish regained the land. In 1674, dismissing the Duke of York, Governor Andras took possession of the land.
Tribeca was later part of a large tract of land given to Trinity Church Que An in 1705. In 1807, the church built St. John’s Chapel on Verrick Street and laid out St. John’s Park, bounded by Leith Street, Verrick Street, Ericsson Place and Hudson Street. The church also built Hudson Square, a development of brick houses that surrounded a park that became the model for Gramercy Park. The area was one of the first residential neighborhoods established in New York outside the colonial city limits and remained predominantly residential until the 1840s.

Several streets in the area are named after Anthony Lispard Bleecker and the Lispard family. Beech Street was established in the late 18th century and was the first street on or near Anthony Lispard Bleecker’s farm south of what is now Canal Street; the name of the street is a corruption of the name of Paul Bach, Anthony Lispard’s son-in-law.
In the 1840s and after the American Civil War, shipping in New York City, which consisted only of Manhattan, largely shifted from the East River and the area around South Street to the Hudson River, where longer piers could more easily handle by larger ships that were commissioned. In addition, the dredging of the sandbars that lay across the Trans to New York Harbor from the Atlantic Ocean made it easier for ships to navigate to berths on the Hudson rather than using the “black passage” through the East River to dock there.
Later, the Hudson River piers also received cargo by rail cars brought across the river from New Jersey.

The growth of shipping spurred the expansion of the Washington Market—a wholesale produce market that operated in 1813 as a “bear market”—from the original market buildings to buildings throughout the neighborhood, taking over houses and warehouses to store produce, including butter, cheese, and eggs.
In the mid-19th century, the area was the center of the city’s drying and textile industries, and St. John’s Park was converted into a freight depot.
Later, the area also featured fireworks, pet stores, radios – which were grouped in the area that was housed by the World Trade Center building – sporting goods, shoes and church supplies.
By the mid-19th century, the area had developed into a commercial center with many shops and lofts built along Broadway in the 1850s and 1860s.

Development of the area was further stimulated by the construction of the New York City Subway, namely the extension of the IRT Broadway – Seventh Avue Line (today’s 1, 2, and 3 trains), which opened in 1918, and the accompanying extension of Seventh Avue and the extension of Varick Street during the construction of the subway in 1914, both led to better access to the area for vehicles and for subway passengers. The area was also served by the IRT Ninth Avue Line, an elevated Grewich Street line that was demolished in 1940.
After the construction of the Holland Tunnel from 1920 to 1927 and the transition of freight transport from ships and railways to trucks,
Truck traffic caused by the market and other businesses caused significant congestion in the area. This prompted the construction between 1929 and 1951 of the Miller Highway, an elevated roadway that became known as the West Side Highway, the purpose of which was to serve automobile traffic that would thus not have to deal with truck congestion on the street. level. Due to a “deferred maintenance” policy, the flyover began to fall apart in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and the highway was closed in 1973. The road project that was planned to replace it, called the Westway, caused a struggle with neighborhood activists, and was eventually killed by environmental concerns. Instead, West Street was rebuilt to handle the traffic.
By the 1960s, Tribeca’s industrial base had all but disappeared, and the grocery market moved to Hunts Point in the Bronx in the 1960s. The city implemented a plan for the reconstruction of the city, which involved the demolition of many old buildings in order to build high-rise residential towers, office buildings and schools. Several were built, including Independence Plaza in 1975 on Washington Street, Community College of Manhattan in 1980, and Washington Market Park in 1981.

Some of the warehouses were converted into living quarters and the lofts came to be used by artists who lived and worked in their spaces, a model pioneered in nearby Soho.
In the early 1970s, a few years after artists in SoHo were able to legalize their lives/work, artist and resident organizations in the area to the south known as “Washington Market” or the “Lower West Side” sought to obtain similar zoning status for their area. One of the neighborhood groups called itself the “Triangle Under the Canal, Block Association” and, as activists in Soho had done, shortened the group’s name to the Tribeca Block Association. The name Tribeca came to be applied to the area south of Canal Street, between Broadway and West Street, extending south to—by various definitions—Chambers, Vesey,

The Tribeca Film Festival was founded to help contribute to the long-term recovery of lower Manhattan after 9/11. The festival also celebrates New York as a major center of film production. The mission of the film festival is to “enable the international film community and the general public to experience the power of film by redefining the film festival experience.” Tribeca is a popular filming location for movies and TV shows.
